Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Merthyr Tydfil

Merthyr Tydfil — a region worth exploring

Merthyr Tydfil sits at the head of the Taff Valley, where the Brecon Beacons National Park (now Bannau Brycheiniog) begins its sweep northward across some of Wales's most dramatic upland scenery. Once the ironworking capital of the world, the town produced more iron than anywhere else on the planet during the early nineteenth century, and you can still trace that heritage at Cyfarthfa Castle and Museum, built in 1825 for the Crawshay ironmaster dynasty. The Taff Trail runs 88 km from Cardiff Bay right through Merthyr Tydfil and onward into the national park, making it a superb base for walkers and cyclists travelling by campervan. From Merthyr Tydfil to the market town of Brecon is just 30 km along the A470, a route that climbs past the Pontsticill Reservoir and the Brecon Mountain Railway before dropping into the Usk Valley. Pen y Fan, the highest peak in southern Britain at 886 metres, is easily reached from lay-bys along this stretch. To the south, the BikePark Wales trails at Gethin Woodland offer world-class mountain biking, while the restored Joseph Parry's Ironworker's Cottage gives a glimpse of Victorian working life. Hiring a motorhome through Yescapa connects you with local owners across south Wales, so you can collect a vehicle nearby and set off into the national park without delay. A campervan gives you the flexibility to explore both the industrial heritage sites in town and the open moorland just minutes away.

Best time to visit

May to September is ideal for a campervan trip around Merthyr Tydfil, when the Brecon Beacons trails are at their driest and daylight stretches well past nine in the evening. The Merthyr Rising Festival, usually held in June, fills the town centre with live music and street food. Autumn brings rich colour to the Taff Valley woodlands, and campsites are quieter, so you can often book at short notice. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing means you may find lower hire rates outside the July–August peak, giving you more to spend on local experiences in Merthyr Tydfil.
