Why choose Ulverston for your road trip

Ulverston — a city worth exploring

Ulverston sits at the southern edge of the Lake District, where the Hoad Monument — a replica of the Eddystone Lighthouse built in 1850 to honour Sir John Barrow — crowns Hoad Hill at 133 metres above sea level. The town's cobbled Market Street hosts a traditional charter market every Thursday and Saturday, a tradition stretching back to 1280. You can explore the Laurel and Hardy Museum, dedicated to Stan Laurel who was born here in 1890, or wander through the peaceful grounds of Conishead Priory, home to a Buddhist temple and woodland walks along the shore of Morecambe Bay. The Cumbria Way long-distance footpath begins in Ulverston, leading 112 km north to Carlisle through some of England's finest landscapes. Kendal is just 19 km to the east, while the popular town of Windermere lies 22 km to the north, making Ulverston a superb base for day trips across the southern Lakes. The surrounding roads are well suited to larger vehicles, with the A590 providing straightforward access, though some lanes closer to the fells narrow considerably. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in the area, giving you the freedom to explore at your own pace while benefiting from peer-to-peer pricing and personal recommendations from people who know these roads well.

Best time to visit

Ulverston comes alive during the Lantern Festival each September, when thousands of handmade lanterns light up the streets in a spectacular community procession. The Dickensian Festival in late November transforms the town centre into a Victorian celebration worth timing your trip around. Summer months from June to August offer the longest days for exploring the southern Lake District by campervan, with plenty of campsite availability nearby. For quieter roads and lower hire costs, consider visiting in spring or early autumn — Yescapa's peer-to-peer model means you can often find a motorhome at a great price outside peak season.
