Why choose Chester for your road trip

Chester — a city worth exploring

Chester's city walls form the most complete circuit of Roman and medieval defences in Britain, stretching 3.2 km around the historic centre. Walking these walls, you pass landmarks like the Eastgate Clock — the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben — and look down over the unique Chester Rows, two-tiered medieval galleries of shops and restaurants found nowhere else in the world. The city sits on the River Dee, and a stroll along the Groves waterfront leads to the elegant Queen's Park Suspension Bridge. Chester Cathedral, founded as a Benedictine abbey in 1092, houses remarkable medieval carvings and a peaceful cloister garden. For families, Chester Zoo — the most visited zoo in the UK outside London — is just 5 km north of the centre. Beyond the city, the landscape opens up beautifully for touring: Snowdonia National Park lies 80 km to the west, while Liverpool is only 30 km to the north along the M53. The Cheshire countryside surrounding Chester is gentle and green, with wide roads well suited to larger vehicles. Hiring a campervan or motorhome through Yescapa connects you directly with local owners who know the area, so you can pick up your vehicle nearby and set off at your own pace. Chester makes a brilliant base for exploring North Wales, the Wirral Peninsula, and the wider north-west, all from a city steeped in two thousand years of history.

Best time to visit

Chester rewards a visit in any season. Summer brings the Chester Regatta on the River Dee each July, one of the oldest rowing events in the world, while the Chester Literature Festival fills October with talks and readings across the city. Spring and early summer are ideal for campervan touring, with longer daylight hours and comfortable driving conditions through North Wales and the Cheshire countryside. Book ahead through Yescapa for the peak months of July and August, when you benefit from competitive peer-to-peer pricing compared with traditional hire companies. Autumn and winter have their own appeal — Chester's Christmas markets transform the city centre each November and December.

I had the most wonderful trip in Eve’s van. It has everything you need, a great sized fridge, a large comfy bed, cooking equipment, electrics to be off grid, a great shower & toilet. The van ran very smoothly and was a perfect size even driving through the towns was no problem at all. They were very accommodating, helping me with local tip and recommendations. I’d 100% recommend this van to anyone thinking of taking a road trip, you won’t regret it :)

Inigio and his lovely girlfriend looked after Dolly for one week here in the Algarve area. They brought her back clean and in really good shape. Before and during the rental period we had a very good dialogue. I can highly reccomend them to lend your car. :-)

Fantastic experience. Raul really went above and beyond to help us out and was always responsive with any queries we had. The van was in excellent condition, had everything we needed, and was ideal for our trip into the Pyrenees, plus heading south for the solar eclipse. Would highly recommend.
