Why choose Keswick for your road trip

Keswick — a city worth exploring

Keswick sits at the northern end of Derwentwater, one of the Lake District's most photographed lakes, with a 3,000-year-old stone circle — the Castlerigg Stone Circle — standing on a hilltop just east of town. The market town has been welcoming travellers since the 16th century, when graphite was first mined in nearby Borrowdale, and today it remains a natural base for exploring the surrounding fells. You can walk the Derwentwater lakeside path, browse the Keswick Museum, or catch a show at the Theatre by the Lake, which stages year-round productions on the water's edge. The Pencil Museum tells the story of the town's graphite heritage, while the Keswick Launch ferry service lets you hop between seven jetties around Derwentwater. Penrith is just 27 km north-east along the A66, and the market town of Cockermouth — birthplace of William Wordsworth — lies 21 km to the north-west. Roads around Keswick can be narrow and winding, particularly through Borrowdale and over Honister Pass, so plan your route carefully if you are driving a larger vehicle. With Yescapa, you hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across Cumbria, giving you the freedom to explore the northern Lakes at your own pace without the overhead of a traditional hire company.

Best time to visit

Keswick comes alive during the Keswick Mountain Festival each May, with outdoor activities, live music, and fell-running events across town. The Keswick Beer Festival in June draws crowds to the Pencil Museum grounds. Summer months offer the longest daylight hours for walking the fells, while autumn brings golden colours across Derwentwater and quieter campsites. Booking a campervan through Yescapa outside peak summer lets you take advantage of flexible peer-to-peer pricing, and you will find more availability at local sites. Whenever you visit, reserve your motorhome early for school holiday periods.

What our users say about our campervans and motorhomes in Keswick

This was our first experience hiring a van and it was very good. Patrick was super helpful and friendly. We experienced some problems with the battery but Patrick was very responsive and helpful trying to solve this. The van has everything you need, although a cradle for your phone would be useful if using for directions as there is no satnav. The bed was surprisingly spacious and very comfy- we slept very well considering the 40 degree heat wave! We would recommend this van to you. Thank you Patrick!

Lovely campervan with everything you need, friendly owner and easy handover. The only down side was the security deposit process was difficult, as money was being transferred from a UK account to a French one. This was not instant on either transaction and unfortunately we ended up £58 down on our return due to exchange rates. I think using a deposit holding company would be a better option for both parties.

Stefano was great I added the airport shuttle option and he was on time and friendly - the van was great i took it up to the Dolomites and it was small enough for all the roads and carparks and the perfect compact van with everything you'd need. It was warm enough and comfortable and useful. Great experience!

Nil and his partner were second time renters now in July 2026, back then Nov 2024. It was great having them again and I only have positive things to say about them :)! They left the van in impeccable condition, each time. They are flexible with timing or if there is any issue. They communicate well. I'm super happy to rent to them again and if any other renter reads this, don't hesitate at all!
