Stockport's iconic railway viaduct, completed in 1840, stretches across 27 arches and remains one of the largest brick structures in Europe. This Greater Manchester town sits where the rivers Goyt and Tame merge to form the Mersey, giving it a distinctive valley setting that shapes its character. You can explore the Stockport Air Raid Shelters, a network of tunnels carved into sandstone cliffs during the Second World War, or spend time at Staircase House, a medieval merchant's home dating back to the 15th century. Hat Works, the UK's only museum dedicated to the hatting industry, tells the story of Stockport's role as the hat-making capital of the world. The Peak District National Park lies just 19 km to the east, while Manchester city centre is only 10 km to the north-west, making Stockport an excellent base for day trips in a campervan. The town's compact centre is easy to navigate, though the hilly terrain and narrow lanes in surrounding villages are worth bearing in mind when planning your route in a motorhome. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners who know the area well, giving you insider tips on the best routes into the Peaks and beyond. This peer-to-peer approach means more choice, competitive pricing, and a personal touch you simply will not find elsewhere.
Stockport comes alive in June with the Stockport Old Town Festival, a weekend of live music, food stalls, and heritage walks through the Market Place. Autumn brings the Foodie Friday events along Heaton Moor Road, perfect for sampling local flavours before heading into the countryside. Summer is the busiest period for campervan travel, so booking your vehicle early through Yescapa gives you the widest choice and the best peer-to-peer rates. Spring and early autumn offer quieter roads into the Peak District, with campsites more readily available midweek. Stockport's sheltered valley position keeps conditions pleasant for most of the year.
Stockport is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 35 km south-east from Stockport through the winding roads of the Goyt Valley, stopping at Errwood Reservoir for a waterside walk. Buxton's Crescent and Pavilion Gardens reward you at the end. Campervan parking is available near the town centre, and the route suits confident drivers on narrower stretches.
Drive 55 km south from Stockport, pausing at Lyme Park, the National Trust estate famous for its deer park and Italianate garden. Continue to Macclesfield to visit the Silk Museum and explore the Treacle Market. Several campervan-friendly laybys dot the route through the Cheshire countryside.
Cover 120 km north-east from Stockport to reach the Yorkshire Dales, passing through Skipton and its medieval castle. Explore Malham Cove's limestone pavement and the village of Grassington. Motorhome pitches are plentiful at sites around Settle, and the A65 offers a smooth, scenic drive.
Travel 150 km north-west from Stockport to Windermere, gateway to the Lake District. Stop at Lancaster for a castle visit before reaching Ambleside and Grasmere. Campsites with full hook-ups line the shores of the major lakes, and the M6 keeps the first half of the journey straightforward.
A 210 km drive south-west from Stockport brings you to the heart of Snowdonia National Park. Break the journey at Chester to walk the Roman walls, then continue to Betws-y-Coed and Llanberis. Motorhome services are available at several stops along the A5, and mountain views are constant.
Head 280 km north-east from Stockport to reach Northumberland's coastline. Visit Alnwick Castle and its famous gardens, then drive on to Bamburgh and Holy Island. Campervan-friendly aires and campsites sit close to the beaches, and the A1 makes for easy, relaxed driving throughout.

Stockport sits on the edge of the Cheshire Plain and the Peak District foothills, so you have a fine mix of countryside and moorland campsites within easy reach. Most sites in the surrounding area offer hardstanding pitches, electric hook-ups, and modern shower blocks suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. Several are open year-round, giving you flexibility whatever the season.
Stockport offers several options for parking larger vehicles, though it is worth checking height restrictions before entering multi-storey car parks in the town centre. On-street parking for motorhomes is limited, so dedicated car parks on the outskirts are your best bet. Overnight parking in public car parks is generally not permitted unless signposted otherwise, so plan ahead if you need to stay the night.
I highly recommend renting from Handy! The camper van was absolute perfection for our family road trip with two young children, and its condition was top-notch. At pickup, Handy was incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and accommodating, taking the time to explain all the various systems and how to best operate the vehicle. He was also super responsive and helpful whenever I had quick questions during our trip. I couldn't have asked for a better host or vehicle. Thank you, Handy!
very good experience with the owner Luis. I recommend
Esperienza positiva
