Why choose Rochdale for your road trip

Rochdale — a city worth exploring

Rochdale's Town Hall, completed in 1871 and often regarded as one of the finest Gothic Revival municipal buildings in the country, sets the tone for a town rich in industrial heritage and green surroundings. The Rochdale Pioneers Museum on Toad Lane tells the story of the modern co-operative movement, which began right here in 1844. Hollingworth Lake Country Park, just 5 km to the north-east, offers waterside walks and watersports, while the Rochdale Canal winds through the town centre and connects to the wider Pennine waterway network. For a dose of culture, head to Touchstones Rochdale, a combined art gallery, museum and local studies centre housed in a beautifully restored building. The surrounding landscape is ideal for exploring on four wheels — the Peak District National Park sits roughly 30 km to the south-east, and the city of Manchester is only 17 km to the south-west, giving you easy access to urban attractions and countryside escapes alike. Roads around Rochdale are well suited to larger vehicles, though some moorland lanes above the town can be narrow, so plan your route if you are heading into the Pennines. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in the Rochdale area, making it simple to pick up your vehicle nearby and set off on a Pennine adventure without the fuss of a traditional depot. Whether you are after heritage trails or hilltop views, Rochdale is a practical and rewarding base.

Best time to visit

Rochdale comes alive in summer, when the Rochdale Feel Good Festival in June fills the town centre with live music, food stalls and family entertainment. Autumn brings the Rochdale Literature and Ideas Festival, a great excuse to explore the town's cultural side. For campervan travel, the months from May to September offer the longest daylight hours and the driest conditions for Pennine drives. Book early for July and August, when demand for motorhome hire peaks across the north of England. Through Yescapa, you can often find competitive rates from local owners during quieter months like April or October, ideal for a relaxed trip with fewer crowds at Hollingworth Lake and along the canal towpaths.

First time ever in a camper van abroad, have to say Diego was a great guy, helpful before our visit, during and made sure everything was smooth sailing/camping, thanks for ramming my sons first camping trip a succcess! R

Lovely campervan with everything you need, friendly owner and easy handover. The only down side was the security deposit process was difficult, as money was being transferred from a UK account to a French one. This was not instant on either transaction and unfortunately we ended up £58 down on our return due to exchange rates. I think using a deposit holding company would be a better option for both parties.

Stefano was great I added the airport shuttle option and he was on time and friendly - the van was great i took it up to the Dolomites and it was small enough for all the roads and carparks and the perfect compact van with everything you'd need. It was warm enough and comfortable and useful. Great experience!

Nil and his partner were second time renters now in July 2026, back then Nov 2024. It was great having them again and I only have positive things to say about them :)! They left the van in impeccable condition, each time. They are flexible with timing or if there is any issue. They communicate well. I'm super happy to rent to them again and if any other renter reads this, don't hesitate at all!
