Cheshire's 56-mile Sandstone Trail stretches from Frodsham to Whitchurch, crossing some of England's most distinctive rural landscapes and offering walkers and travellers alike a taste of the county's rich character. From the medieval rows of Chester — the only city in England with a complete circuit of Roman walls — to the elegant market town of Knutsford, which inspired Elizabeth Gaskell's novel Cranford, Cheshire rewards those who take the time to explore. The county sits between the Peak District to the east and the Welsh borders to the west, with Chester to Liverpool covering roughly 30 miles and Macclesfield to Nantwich around 25 miles, making it wonderfully compact for a touring holiday. Jodrell Bank Observatory, a UNESCO World Heritage Site home to the iconic Lovell Telescope, is a must-visit, while Tatton Park near Knutsford offers a thousand acres of deer park, gardens, and a working farm. The Cheshire Plain's flat, open terrain is ideal for campervans and motorhomes of all sizes, with well-maintained A-roads connecting pretty villages and market towns. Canals thread through the landscape too — the Anderton Boat Lift near Northwich is an extraordinary feat of Victorian engineering worth a detour. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across Cheshire, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to suit your group and your plans. It is a peer-to-peer approach that keeps things personal, flexible, and often more affordable than traditional hire.
Cheshire is a rewarding destination from spring through to autumn. May and June bring wildflower displays along the Sandstone Trail and longer daylight hours for exploring. The RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park, typically held each July, draws garden enthusiasts from across the country and is well worth timing your trip around. Autumn sees the deer rut at Tatton Park and Lyme Park — a memorable experience from your campervan doorstep. Booking through Yescapa outside the peak summer weeks can mean better availability and more competitive hire prices from local owners across Cheshire, so consider a late spring or early autumn visit for a quieter, equally enjoyable trip.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Follow the Sandstone Trail's route by road from Frodsham through Delamere Forest to Beeston Castle, then loop back via Tarporley. Around 120 km of gentle Cheshire countryside, ideal for a campervan with plenty of quiet parking spots and picnic areas along the way.
Start in Chester, explore the Roman walls and cathedral, then head south along the River Dee towards Farndon and Malpas. At roughly 95 km, this short route suits motorhomes and takes in riverside walks, half-timbered villages, and excellent local produce shops.
Link Cheshire's finest market towns — Knutsford, Nantwich, Sandbach, and Middlewich — on a 180 km loop that passes Tatton Park and the salt heritage sites of Northwich. Campervan-friendly roads and well-spaced stops make this a relaxed week's touring.
Trace Cheshire's canal network by road from Ellesmere Port's National Waterways Museum to the Anderton Boat Lift, then on through Congleton and back via Crewe. This 210 km route offers waterside walks and canalside campsites suited to motorhomes.
Head east from Chester through Macclesfield and into the Peak District edges at Buxton and Lyme Park, returning via Poynton and Wilmslow. At 280 km, this route combines Cheshire's plains with dramatic moorland — a campervan adventure with real variety.
A comprehensive 350 km circuit taking in Chester, Nantwich, Jodrell Bank, Macclesfield, Knutsford, and Frodsham, with optional detours into North Wales and Shropshire. Suits larger motorhomes and those wanting to experience every corner of Cheshire at a leisurely pace.

Cheshire offers a good spread of campsites, from well-equipped parks near Chester to peaceful rural sites on the edge of the Peak District. Many provide hardstanding pitches, electric hook-ups, and modern shower blocks suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. You will also find sites close to canals and country parks, giving you easy access to walking and cycling routes across the county.
Cheshire benefits from excellent motorway links, with the M6, M56, and M53 all crossing the county. Most motorways in England are toll-free, though the M6 Toll runs nearby in Staffordshire. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.05 tonnes are 60 mph on motorways and 50 mph on single carriageway roads. The M56 connects Manchester to Chester and is well served by service stations. Cheshire's A-roads, such as the A49 and A34, are generally wide and well-surfaced, making them comfortable for larger vehicles. Height restrictions apply at some older canal bridges, so plan your route carefully if you are travelling in a taller motorhome.
Esperienza positiva
Beyond happy with the whole experience. The motorhome was very comfy and had everything we needed for our little girls camping trip. More importantly the owners were extremely friendly and beyond helpful at all times with the vehicle, the routes, the airport pickups and dropp offs and many many more things! All and all very happy with this experience!
The experience was seemles from start to finish. Handover was very straightforward with all the major information required exchanged. Fabian the owner remained available during the trip for any issues that may arise. The vehicle was as advertised and in very good condition. Very nice camping caravan, equipped with everything that you could need. The return process was straightforward when returning vehicle. Also my car was kept securley stored at the location for arrival and drop off. Overall very good experience and i would highly recommend and use again in the future.
We really enjoyed our travels around Brittany in Clarisse's camper van. It was comfortable and easy to drive and had everything we needed for our holiday. Clarisse explained everything clearly to us before we set off.
