Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Greater Manchester

Greater Manchester — a region worth exploring

Greater Manchester sits at the crossroads of northern England, where the Bridgewater Canal — the first true canal of the Industrial Revolution, opened in 1761 — still winds through the heart of the conurbation. This metropolitan county packs ten boroughs into roughly 1,276 square kilometres, giving you an extraordinary mix of urban culture and countryside escapes. From the Imperial War Museum North on Salford Quays to the cobbled streets of Rochdale's historic town centre, there is always something to discover. The Peak District National Park borders the eastern edge, meaning you can drive from Manchester city centre to the moorland plateau of Saddleworth Moor in under 30 minutes. Head north-west and Bolton is just 18 km from Wigan, yet the landscape shifts from mill-town heritage to the wetlands of Wigan Flashes. Families love the interactive galleries at the Museum of Science and Industry, while walkers are drawn to the West Pennine Moors above Ramsbottom. Cycling routes along the Fallowfield Loop and the Irwell Sculpture Trail connect green corridors that feel a world away from the motorway network. Hiring a campervan or motorhome through Yescapa connects you with local owners across Greater Manchester, so you can collect your vehicle close to home and set off without delay. Whether you choose a compact campervan for weekend jaunts or a larger motorhome for a longer tour, the peer-to-peer model keeps things flexible and personal.

Best time to visit

Greater Manchester comes alive from May to September, when longer days suit open-air events such as the Manchester International Festival, held every two years in July. Autumn brings the Rochdale Literature and Ideas Festival in October, ideal for a quieter cultural break. Campsites on the Pennine fringe tend to fill quickly in July and August, so booking your campervan or motorhome early is worthwhile. Outside peak months, Yescapa's peer-to-peer pricing often drops, giving you a more affordable hire while the region's museums, galleries and indoor markets remain open year-round across Greater Manchester.

Greater Manchester is ringed by the M60 motorway, one of the few orbital motorways outside London, connecting all ten boroughs. The M62 crosses east to west and the M61 heads north towards Lancashire. Motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes follow standard UK speed limits — 70 mph on motorways and 60 mph on dual carriageways — while vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are limited to 60 mph on motorways and 50 mph on single carriageways. There are no toll roads within the county, though the nearby M6 Toll in Staffordshire accepts card and cash. Rest areas with services appear regularly along the M62 and M60.
