Why choose Preston for your road trip

Preston — a city worth exploring

Preston's Harris Museum & Art Gallery, a Grade I listed neoclassical building opened in 1893, houses one of the finest collections of fine and decorative art in the north of England. As Lancashire's proud county city, Preston sits along the River Ribble and offers a rewarding mix of heritage, green spaces and cultural attractions. You can explore Avenham and Miller Parks, two beautifully restored Victorian parks that sweep down to the riverbank, or visit the Lancashire Infantry Museum at Fulwood Barracks for a fascinating look at military history. The National Football Museum was originally based here before relocating, a nod to Preston North End's status as the first-ever Football League champions in 1889. The city also makes a superb base for wider exploration — the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty lies just 20 km to the north-east, while the seaside resort of Blackpool is only 27 km to the west along the M55. Preston's position on the M6 motorway corridor means you can head north to the Lake District or south to Manchester with ease, and the surrounding Lancashire countryside offers plenty of open roads suited to larger vehicles. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in the Preston area, giving you the flexibility to pick up nearby and set off on your own schedule. It is a practical, peer-to-peer way to travel that connects you with people who know the region well.

Best time to visit

Preston comes alive during the Preston Guild, a celebration held once every 20 years — the next is in 2032, but the city hosts plenty in between. The Lancashire Encounter festival in September fills the streets with live music, dance and performance. Summer months from June to August bring the longest days and warmest weather, ideal for campervan trips into the Forest of Bowland or along the Ribble estuary. Book early for peak season, as campsite pitches around Preston fill up with families and touring groups. For quieter roads and more availability, spring and autumn are excellent — and with Yescapa's peer-to-peer model, you can often find competitive hire prices outside the busiest weeks.

Where to park your motorhome

Preston city centre has several car parks that can accommodate larger vehicles, though height barriers apply at some multi-storey facilities. For motorhomes and campervans, surface-level car parks are the safest option. Overnight parking in the city centre is generally not permitted, so plan to return to a campsite or designated aire for the night. Always check signage for height and length restrictions before entering.

  • Preston Riversway Docklands Car Park, 2km west — Open surface car park near the marina with space for larger vehicles. No height barrier. Pay and display.
  • St George's Shopping Centre Car Park, Adjacent to the city — Central location but check height restrictions — best for smaller campervans only.
  • Avenham Car Park, 1km south — Surface car park close to Avenham Park. Suitable for campervans with no height barrier. Short walk to the city centre.

An absolute 10/10 experience from start to finish! The owners were exceptionally professional, super friendly, and made everything from initial contact to booking and collection completely seamless. Meeting their beloved camper van, 'Olaf,' was the highlight of our trip. As first-time drivers of anything larger than an SUV, we were initially nervous, but Olaf completely surprised us—being fully automatic and featuring Android Auto infotainment system, he was an absolute breeze to drive and got us to our destinations hassle-free. The camper is fully equipped with everything you could possibly need for a short getaway, and honestly, you could easily stay much longer. If we ever find ourselves back in France, we would love to take Olaf out for another spin!

We absolutely loved our time in the caddy! Everything was great, from the collection, the functionality and the communication. The van is small but mighty, the owners have thought of every little detail (sink, shower, storage, kitchen, and a good sized comfy bed). We highly recommend using Yescapa and hiring this van- perfect for your dolomites adventure!
