Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Lake District

Lake District — a region worth exploring

The Lake District holds the title of England's largest national park, covering 2,362 square kilometres of fells, valleys and, of course, lakes — sixteen of them in total. From the shores of Windermere, England's longest natural lake at 17 kilometres, to the summit of Scafell Pike at 978 metres, this corner of Cumbria packs an extraordinary range of landscapes into a compact area. Keswick to Ambleside is just 27 kilometres, yet the drive takes you past Thirlmere reservoir, through the Dunmail Raise pass and into the heart of the central fells. Head west and you reach Wastwater, regularly voted Britain's favourite view, while the Honister Pass connects Borrowdale to Buttermere with dramatic hairpin bends that reward careful driving. Literary landmarks add depth to every route — Wordsworth's Dove Cottage in Grasmere and Beatrix Potter's Hill Top farmhouse near Hawkshead are both easy stops on a touring itinerary. The 65-kilometre stretch from Penrith to Barrow-in-Furness crosses the full length of the Lake District, giving you a taste of everything from open moorland to sheltered estuaries. Travelling by campervan lets you wake up lakeside one morning and fell-side the next, with the freedom to follow your own schedule. Through Yescapa, you can hire a motorhome or campervan directly from local owners across the region, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match your group size and travel style.

Best time to visit

The Lake District is a year-round destination, though May to September offers the longest daylight hours and the driest conditions for fell walking and lakeside stops. The Keswick Mountain Festival in May is a brilliant way to kick off the season, while the Grasmere Sports and Show in August celebrates traditional Cumbrian culture with fell racing and wrestling. Spring and autumn bring quieter roads and softer light — ideal for a campervan tour at a relaxed pace. Winter opens up cosy pub stops and frost-dusted peaks with fewer visitors around. Booking through Yescapa during shoulder months often means better availability and more competitive hire prices from local owners across the Lake District.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Lake District

The Lake District has no motorways running through the national park itself, though the M6 skirts its eastern edge and provides easy access from the north and south. Inside the park, roads are mostly single carriageway A-roads and narrow B-roads. Speed limits on many rural stretches drop to 30 or 40 mph, and some passes like Hardknott and Wrynose have gradients up to 30% — best suited to smaller campervans rather than large motorhomes. There are no toll roads in the region. Passing places are common on single-track lanes, so patience and courtesy go a long way. Several car parks have height barriers, so check signage if you are travelling in a taller vehicle.
