Why choose Wigan for your road trip

Wigan — a city worth exploring

Wigan's DW Stadium has hosted both rugby league and football since 1999, making it one of few grounds in England shared by two professional clubs. The town sits at the heart of Greater Manchester, where the Leeds and Liverpool Canal threads through the centre alongside the River Douglas. You can explore Wigan Pier Quarter, the waterfront area immortalised by George Orwell's 1937 book, then wander through Mesnes Park with its Victorian bandstand and ornamental lake. Haigh Woodland Park, just 3 km north-east, offers over 100 hectares of trails, a miniature railway, and a walled garden — ideal for a morning walk before hitting the road. History enthusiasts will enjoy Trencherfield Mill, home to the world's largest working mill engine, while families can spend an afternoon at WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre, 25 km to the west. Liverpool lies 30 km south-west, giving you easy access to the Mersey waterfront and Albert Dock. The flat terrain around Wigan and the well-connected motorway network — the M6 runs right past the town — make it a comfortable base for exploring Lancashire and beyond in a campervan or motorhome. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners in the area, which means flexible pick-up points and genuine tips on where to go next. Whether you are planning a weekend loop through the Ribble Valley or a longer tour of the Lake District, a campervan from Wigan puts you within easy reach of coast, countryside, and city alike.

Best time to visit

Wigan comes alive in late August and early September during the Wigan International Jazz Festival, which draws performers from across Europe. The World Pie Eating Championship, held each December in the town centre, is another unmissable local event. Summer months are ideal for campervan touring, with longer daylight hours and pleasant conditions for exploring the Lancashire countryside. If you prefer quieter roads and more availability at campsites, spring and early autumn are excellent choices. Booking through Yescapa gives you access to peer-to-peer pricing, often more competitive than traditional hire, especially outside peak season. Plan ahead for school holidays to secure the best selection of motorhomes near Wigan.

Great experience renting the Jimny. The owners were brilliant to deal with from start to finish, and the Jeep was in excellent condition. It was perfect for exploring the Algarve. Would definitely recommend and would happily rent from them again!

Clean, well-maintained vehicle that gave us so many great memories! We traveled to many places and drove around 900 km ourselves, and it handled everything flawlessly. Thanks to its size, parking was super easy, we could fit anywhere, and we were able to sleep in spots where a different kind of campervan wouldn't have worked. It is fully equipped with everything provided, even extra games for beach days! The bed and bedding were clean, and it has a really comfortable mattress. The owners were super nice and sweet. Everything went smoothly during both pickup and drop-off, and they were always there to help whenever we needed it, even when we got a bit lost! 😅 Plus point that they were super cool and easy to talk to. P.S. The AC works like a charm!
