Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Merseyside

Merseyside — a region worth exploring

Merseyside's waterfront at Liverpool holds UNESCO World Heritage recognition for its historic docks, where the Royal Albert Dock alone draws over six million visitors each year. This metropolitan county on England's north-west coast stretches from the sandy shores of Formby and Crosby to the bustling centres of Birkenhead and St Helens, offering a surprisingly varied landscape for touring by road. The drive from Southport in the north to Liverpool city centre covers roughly 32 km, while crossing the Mersey via the Kingsway Tunnel to reach Port Sunlight on the Wirral peninsula is just 8 km. Beyond the famous musical heritage of the Cavern Quarter, you can explore the vast expanse of Sefton Coast, one of the largest dune systems in England, or wander through Knowsley Safari Park for a wildlife encounter right on Merseyside's doorstep. The Wirral Way, a former railway line turned walking and cycling trail, runs for 19 km along the Dee Estuary — ideal for a day trip from a nearby campsite. Flat terrain and well-connected roads make Merseyside easy to navigate in a campervan or motorhome, whether you are weaving through coastal villages or parking up near the city's cultural attractions. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan directly from local owners across Merseyside, giving you flexible pick-up points and a wide choice of vehicles suited to weekend breaks or longer adventures along the north-west coast.

Best time to visit

May to September is the prime window for a campervan trip around Merseyside, when long daylight hours let you make the most of coastal walks at Formby and open-air events in Liverpool. The International Mersey River Festival, usually held each June, fills the waterfront with tall ships and live music. Autumn brings the Liverpool Biennial — the UK's largest contemporary art festival — running from October into early winter. Booking through Yescapa outside peak summer months often means lower hire prices from local owners, and campsites across Merseyside tend to have wider availability from late spring onward.

The best road trips in Merseyside

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Sefton Coast Run

80 km 3–5 days

Follow the Merseyside coastline from Crosby, where Antony Gormley's Another Place iron figures stand on the beach, north to Southport's Victorian pier. At roughly 80 km return, this short loop suits a campervan weekend, with stops at Formby's red squirrel reserve and Ainsdale Sand Dunes National Nature Reserve.

Wirral Peninsula Circuit

65 km 3–6 days

Circle the Wirral from Birkenhead to West Kirby and down to Parkgate, covering around 65 km. Visit Port Sunlight's model village, Hilbre Island at low tide, and the RSPB reserve at Burton Mere Wetlands. Flat roads across Merseyside make this route ideal for any motorhome size.

Merseyside to the Lakes

300 km 5–8 days

Head north from Liverpool through Merseyside's suburbs, joining the M6 towards Kendal and into the Lake District. At around 300 km return, you can explore Windermere, Ambleside, and Coniston before looping back. A campervan gives you the freedom to stop at lakeside campsites along the way.

North Wales and the Coast

350 km 5–8 days

Cross the Mersey from Merseyside into North Wales, following the A55 past Conwy Castle to Llandudno and Snowdonia's foothills. This 350 km loop takes in Anglesey's beaches and the Great Orme headland. Motorhome-friendly laybys and campsites are plentiful along the Welsh coast.

North-West Grand Tour

550 km 7–11 days

Start in Liverpool and arc through Merseyside to Chester, then on to Shrewsbury, the Peak District, and Manchester before returning. Covering roughly 550 km, this route blends city culture with rolling countryside. Campervan travellers can break the journey at well-equipped sites near Buxton and Macclesfield.

Atlantic Seaboard Explorer

700 km 10–15 days

From Merseyside, drive south through Cheshire and into mid-Wales, then follow Cardigan Bay's coastline to Pembrokeshire before returning via the Brecon Beacons and the M56. At around 700 km, this extended campervan adventure covers dramatic cliffs, quiet harbours, and some of Britain's finest beaches.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Merseyside

Merseyside is served by the M62, M57, and M53 motorways, all toll-free, making it straightforward to reach from most parts of England. The Mersey Tunnels — Queensway and Kingsway — do charge a toll (currently £2.00 for cars; larger motorhomes may pay more depending on height). Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.05 tonnes are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways and motorways. Roads within Liverpool city centre can be narrow, so plan your route if you are driving a larger vehicle. Rest areas and services are well spaced along the M62 corridor.

We rented the van for almost 3 weeks and we had a lovely time exploring Spain. The van has everything we needed and working properly. It’s spacious and comfortable for two to sleep. We were a bit worried about the heatwave the country was having and Jeremie managed to buy a double fan for us to sleep, which we highly appreciated. He is very friendly and good with communicating. The van runs smoothly, we just had a message on the screen to top up the oil (which was easy enough to stop at the petrol station and buy one - with Jeremie instructions we were able to do it). We really recommend renting his van for your adventure. ☺️

It was a genuine pleasure travelling in Álvaro’s campervan. Not only was it well maintained and fully equipped, but Álvaro also proved to be an exceptional host—friendly, responsive, and always willing to help. His support played a key role in ensuring that the trip went as smoothly as possible. I would recommend him without hesitation and sincerely hope to have the opportunity to repeat the experience. Thank you very much for everything!
