Why choose Lancaster for your road trip

Lancaster — a city worth exploring

Lancaster's castle has stood watch over the River Lune for more than 900 years, and parts of the fortress still serve as a Crown Court today. Compact yet full of character, this historic city in north-west England rewards curious travellers with a mix of Georgian architecture, independent shops, and green riverside walks. The Ashton Memorial in Williamson Park rises above the skyline — a striking Edwardian folly sometimes called "the Taj Mahal of the North." Stroll through Lancaster City Museum to trace the city's links to the canal age and maritime trade, or follow the towpath along the Lancaster Canal for a peaceful stretch on foot or by bike. The Dukes Theatre, housed in a former church, offers a lively programme of drama and live music year-round. For a change of scenery, Morecambe Bay is just 6 km to the west, where vast tidal flats attract wading birds and spectacular sunsets, while the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty begins roughly 11 km to the east, offering quiet lanes ideal for a campervan day trip. Lancaster's university quarter gives the city a youthful energy, with cafés and eateries clustered around the centre. Hiring a motorhome through Yescapa connects you with local owners who know the best overnight spots and scenic routes, making it easy to combine a city break with the surrounding countryside in one flexible trip by campervan.

Best time to visit

Lancaster comes alive each October during the Light Up Lancaster festival, when buildings and public spaces are transformed by large-scale light installations. Summer months bring the Lancaster Music Festival in July, filling pubs, churches, and streets with free performances. Booking a campervan between May and September gives you the longest daylight hours for exploring the Lune Valley and Morecambe Bay. Spring and autumn are quieter, so you can often find more flexible availability and competitive rates through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform. Whenever you visit, plan your hire early for weekends and school holidays.

Top getaways from Lancaster

Lancaster is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways

Lancaster to Morecambe and Arnside

45km west 1–3 days

Head 6 km west to Morecambe for its Art Deco Midland Hotel and the Eric Morecambe statue on the promenade. Continue 39 km around the bay to Arnside, a quiet village with walks up Arnside Knott. Campervan parking is available along the seafront at Morecambe, and Arnside has a small public car park near the viaduct.

Lancaster to the Forest of Bowland

55km east 1–4 days

Drive 55 km into the Forest of Bowland, passing through the Trough of Bowland — a narrow, winding road best taken slowly in a campervan. Stop at Dunsop Bridge, said to be the centre of Great Britain, and visit Slaidburn's Hark to Bounty pub. Quiet roadside laybys and small campsites dot the area.

Lancaster to the Lake District

120km northeast 3–6 days

Travel 120 km north-east into the Lake District, calling at Kendal for its famous mint cake and the Abbot Hall Art Gallery. Continue to Windermere for a lake cruise, then on to Keswick and Derwentwater. Motorhome-friendly campsites are plentiful, though booking ahead in summer is wise.

Lancaster to the Yorkshire Dales

150km southeast 3–6 days

Head 150 km south-east through Settle and its iconic Ribblehead Viaduct to reach the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. Explore Malham Cove's limestone pavement and the market town of Hawes, home to the Wensleydale Creamery. Several campsites welcome campervans with electric hook-ups and waste disposal.

Lancaster to the Northumberland Coast

210km northeast 5–8 days

Drive 210 km north-east to Northumberland, stopping at Carlisle to see the cathedral before continuing to Alnwick Castle and its famous gardens. Finish at Bamburgh, where the castle overlooks miles of sandy beach. Motorhome service points are available at several coastal campsites along the route.

Lancaster to Snowdonia

260km southwest 5–8 days

Head 260 km south-west along the coast into North Wales, pausing at Conwy for its medieval walled town and castle. Continue to Betws-y-Coed, the gateway to Snowdonia National Park, and tackle the Llanberis Pass. Campervan drivers should note single-track sections on mountain roads; designated parking areas are well signed.

Stefano was great I added the airport shuttle option and he was on time and friendly - the van was great i took it up to the Dolomites and it was small enough for all the roads and carparks and the perfect compact van with everything you'd need. It was warm enough and comfortable and useful. Great experience!

Nil and his partner were second time renters now in July 2026, back then Nov 2024. It was great having them again and I only have positive things to say about them :)! They left the van in impeccable condition, each time. They are flexible with timing or if there is any issue. They communicate well. I'm super happy to rent to them again and if any other renter reads this, don't hesitate at all!

It's the second time I've hired from Ruben and I hope not the last. He is very honest and explains everything clearly. His RV is lovely to drive and has everything you need. If you're looking for an RV, go with Ruben!

Martine was a wonderful host and took us through the many features and inventory with kindness and good humour. She made great efforts to help overcome our language barrier, for which we were very grateful. The motor home was in excellent condition and very well appointed. The electric self lowering bed was very comfortable and retracted to the roof freeing up valuable space for the living quarters. The Fiat vehicle controls were easy to handle and once we got used to the size was no trouble motoring around the Loire. The vehicle was very reliable and well maintained. Martine was quick to reply to a water heating issue we had and resolved our query with easy to follow instructions. Overall, we were very satisfied with our 8 day rental and would not hesitate to recommend this motor home for future rentals.
