Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Cambridgeshire

Cambridgeshire — a region worth exploring

Cambridgeshire is home to the oldest surviving purpose-built rowing course in the world — the River Cam stretch between Fen Ditton and Baitsbite Lock, which has hosted competitive races since 1829. Beyond the university city of Cambridge, the county unfolds into a landscape of wide-open fenlands, ancient market towns, and waterways perfect for slow-paced exploration. You can wander the medieval streets of Ely, where the magnificent Ely Cathedral — known as the Ship of the Fens — rises dramatically above the flat terrain. From Cambridge to Peterborough is roughly 65 km, taking you through the heart of the Fens, while the drive from Huntingdon to Wisbech covers around 55 km of quiet, scenic roads ideal for campervans. The Imperial War Museum Duxford, just south of Cambridge, houses one of Europe's finest collections of historic aircraft. Further north, Flag Fen near Peterborough reveals a Bronze Age archaeological site over 3,000 years old. Cambridgeshire's flat terrain and well-maintained roads make it particularly welcoming for motorhome travel, with easy parking and gentle routes throughout. Whether you fancy punting past King's College or cycling the Wicken Fen nature reserve, there is plenty to fill a week or more. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan directly from local owners across Cambridgeshire, giving you a wider choice of vehicles and a more personal start to your trip.

Best time to visit

May to September is the prime window for a campervan trip through Cambridgeshire, when long daylight hours let you make the most of the fenland scenery. The Strawberry Fair in Cambridge each June is a free, community-run music and arts festival well worth timing your visit around. In October, the Ely Eel Festival celebrates the city's heritage with food stalls and live entertainment. Campsites across the county are generally open from Easter through to late October, with the widest availability in July and August. Booking through Yescapa during spring or early autumn often means more competitive hire prices from local owners, plus quieter roads and uncrowded attractions.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Cambridgeshire

Cambridgeshire's roads are toll-free, so you can travel the county without any extra charges. The A14 dual carriageway links Cambridge to Huntingdon and onward to the A1(M), making it the main east–west route. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways. Many fenland roads are single-track with passing places, so take your time and use lay-bys when you meet oncoming traffic. The A1(M) and A11 provide fast north–south connections, and well-signed brown tourist signs guide you to major attractions throughout the county.
