The campervan is the ultimate all-rounder. Effortlessly practical and built for freedom, it’s just as at home navigating tight city streets as it is exploring the heart of the countryside.
St Albans Cathedral, built partly with Roman bricks from the ancient city of Verulamium, holds the longest nave of any cathedral in England at over 84 metres. This Hertfordshire city blends centuries of history with a thriving modern character, making it a rewarding base for exploring by road. Verulamium Park and its Roman museum sit just south-west of the centre, while the Clock Tower on the High Street dates back to 1403 and offers panoramic views from its rooftop. The St Albans Museum + Gallery, housed in the old town hall, traces local life from Roman times to the present day. Keen walkers can follow the Ver Valley Walk along the River Ver, and the twice-weekly Charter Market — one of the oldest in England — fills St Peter's Street with local produce. London lies just 35 km to the south-east, and the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty begins roughly 15 km to the north-west, opening up gentle countryside roads ideal for a campervan adventure. The compact city centre is easy to navigate, though some lanes are narrow, so a motorhome driver benefits from knowing the best routes in and out. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from a local owner, which means personal tips on parking spots, scenic drives, and the quieter approaches that only residents know.
St Albans is enjoyable year-round, with each season offering something distinct. The St Albans Beer Festival in late September draws real-ale enthusiasts from across the region, while the annual Alban Pilgrimage in June fills the streets with colour and pageantry around the cathedral. Summer is the busiest period, so booking your campervan through Yescapa early lets you lock in competitive peer-to-peer prices before demand peaks. Spring and autumn bring quieter roads and comfortable driving conditions around Hertfordshire, and the Charter Market runs every Wednesday and Saturday regardless of season.
St Albans is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 35 km south-east into the capital. Park up at Lee Valley Campsite and explore the South Bank and Greenwich by public transport. Crystal Palace Park and Hampton Court Palace make excellent day stops. Campervan-friendly parking is available at several outer-London sites.
Drive 55 km north-east to the university city. Stroll past King's College Chapel and punt along the River Cam. The Fitzwilliam Museum is free to enter. Several campervan sites sit just outside the city centre, offering hook-ups and easy bus links into town.
Travel 130 km west to rolling limestone villages. Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Stump offer classic Cotswolds scenery. Moreton-in-Marsh has a well-equipped motorhome stopover. Roads are mostly A-roads with gentle gradients, comfortable for larger vehicles.
Head 160 km north-east to wide sandy beaches and salt marshes. Wells-next-the-Sea and Holkham Bay are highlights, with campervan parking right behind the dunes. Blakeney Point offers seal-watching boat trips. Coastal roads are single-track in places, so travel at a relaxed pace.
Cover 240 km north-west into England's first national park. Bakewell and Castleton sit among dramatic limestone dales. Chatsworth House is worth a full afternoon. Motorhome pitches are plentiful around Buxton, and the A515 offers sweeping views across the White Peak.
Drive 280 km west to the Welsh coast. St Davids, Britain's smallest city, and Barafundle Bay reward the journey. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path runs for 300 km. Several well-serviced campervan sites near Tenby provide electric hook-ups and sea views.

St Albans sits in the Hertfordshire countryside, so you will find a good mix of rural and semi-urban campsites within easy reach. Most offer electric hook-ups, hardstanding pitches, and modern shower blocks suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. Several sites border woodland or farmland, giving you a peaceful overnight stay just minutes from the city centre.
St Albans has several car parks that can accommodate larger vehicles, though height barriers apply at some multi-storey facilities. Overnight parking in the city centre is generally not permitted for motorhomes, so plan to return to a campsite in the evening. Check signage for any time or height restrictions before parking.
We went for a 7 days trip with 2 of my friends. It was an amazing time. Camper was really great - in a good condition, clean, comfortable. We did 1000km without any problems. I can recommend this car and Alvaro as a very nice owner.
1st time we have hired a Motorhome, Sandrine was a joy to hire from, answered all of our questions as newbies. She couldn't make hiring their MH any easier, Their Motor home was in perfect condition we had the unlimited Km's option and the vehicle never missed a beat over the long distances we drove, Highly recommend Hiring from Sandrine 5 Star !!
