Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Norfolk

Norfolk — a region worth exploring

Norfolk's 90-mile coastline stretches from The Wash in the west to Great Yarmouth in the east, forming one of England's most rewarding regions for a road trip on four wheels. The Norfolk Broads, a network of navigable rivers and lakes covering 303 square kilometres, sit at the heart of the county and create a landscape unlike anywhere else in the UK. From the seal colonies at Blakeney Point to the grand Jacobean mansion of Blickling Hall, there is plenty to discover at your own pace. The market town of King's Lynn to the seaside resort of Cromer is roughly 70 miles by road, while Norwich to the coastal village of Wells-next-the-Sea covers about 35 miles — both distances that feel perfectly suited to a campervan adventure with stops along the way. Norfolk's flat terrain and well-maintained A-roads make driving a motorhome straightforward, even if you are new to larger vehicles. Quiet lanes wind through villages of flint-walled cottages, past lavender fields at Heacham and the towering red-and-white stripes of Happisburgh Lighthouse. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across Norfolk, choosing from a range of vehicles that match your group size and travel style. Peer-to-peer sharing means competitive prices and personal recommendations from people who know the county inside out.

Best time to visit

May to September is the prime window for a campervan trip through Norfolk, when long daylight hours let you make the most of the coastline and the Broads. The Norfolk and Norwich Festival in May fills the city with music, theatre and art, while the Cromer Carnival in August brings a week of seaside fun to the north coast. Campsites across Norfolk are fully open from Easter onwards, with the widest choice of pitches available in early summer before the school holidays begin. Booking your motorhome through Yescapa outside peak July and August weeks can bring noticeably lower hire prices, thanks to flexible peer-to-peer rates set by individual owners.

The best road trips in Norfolk

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The North Norfolk Coast

130 km 3–6 days

Follow the A149 for around 130 km from King's Lynn to Cromer, passing through Holkham with its vast sandy beach, the harbour village of Wells-next-the-Sea and the flint-built town of Cley next the Sea. Ideal for a campervan, with plenty of coastal campsites en route.

Norwich and the Broads Loop

100 km 3–5 days

Start in Norwich and loop through the Norfolk Broads, taking in Wroxham, Ranworth Broad and the ruins of St Benet's Abbey. This 100 km route suits motorhomes well, with level roads and waterside stopping points throughout the national park.

The Full Norfolk Circuit

250 km 5–8 days

A 250 km circuit linking Norwich, Great Yarmouth, Cromer and King's Lynn covers Norfolk's highlights in one trip. Stop at the Elizabethan Felbrigg Hall near Cromer and the RSPB reserve at Titchwell Marsh. Campervan-friendly campsites are well spaced along the route.

Heritage Estates Trail

180 km 5–8 days

This 180 km route connects Norfolk's great houses — Holkham Hall, Houghton Hall, Oxburgh Hall and Blickling Hall — via quiet country roads. A motorhome gives you the freedom to linger at each estate and explore the surrounding parkland at your leisure.

Norfolk and Suffolk Explorer

400 km 7–11 days

Head south from Norwich through the Waveney Valley to Southwold, then loop back via Thetford Forest and Bury St Edmunds on this 400 km cross-county adventure. A campervan handles the mix of A-roads and country lanes with ease, and wild heathland campsites add variety.

East Anglia Grand Tour

500 km 10–15 days

Cover 500 km from King's Lynn through Norfolk's coast and Broads, south to the Suffolk Heritage Coast and across to Cambridge before returning north. Take in Sandringham Estate, Aldeburgh and the university city. This extended tour suits all motorhome sizes with well-equipped sites throughout.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Norfolk

Norfolk has no motorways, so most travel is on A-roads such as the A11, A47 and A149 coastal route. These are toll-free and generally well maintained, though some stretches of the A47 are single carriageway. Speed limits for motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes match standard car limits, but vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways. Many rural lanes in Norfolk are narrow with passing places, so a smaller campervan can be easier to manoeuvre in the countryside. Lay-bys and car parks along the A149 coast road offer convenient rest stops with sea views.
