Christchurch's Priory Church dates back to 1094, making it one of the longest parish churches in England at over 95 metres. Sitting where the rivers Avon and Stour meet the sea, this Dorset town offers a rewarding mix of history, coastline and green spaces. You can explore Christchurch Castle ruins, a Norman-era site managed by English Heritage, before wandering through the Quomps, a riverside park ideal for a leisurely afternoon. The Red House Museum and Gardens showcases local history and Georgian architecture, while Highcliffe Castle, a Grade I listed mansion just 3 km east, overlooks the sea from its clifftop grounds. Mudeford Quay is a favourite spot for fresh seafood and views across to Hengistbury Head, where you can walk sandy trails above Christchurch Harbour. Bournemouth lies just 8 km to the west, and the New Forest National Park is roughly 16 km to the north-east, giving you easy access to forest trails and wild ponies. The flat coastal roads around Christchurch suit both campervans and larger motorhomes, with wide routes connecting the town to neighbouring beaches and harbours. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from a local owner, which means personal tips on the best parking spots, scenic routes and places only residents know about.
Christchurch comes alive from May to September, when the Christchurch Food Festival draws crowds each May with local producers and live cookery demos. In August, the town hosts the Christchurch Regatta, one of the oldest rowing events on the south coast. Summer is the busiest period, so booking your campervan through Yescapa early gives you the widest choice and competitive peer-to-peer pricing. Spring and autumn are quieter, with mild coastal weather that makes exploring Mudeford Quay and the harbour a pleasure without the crowds. Motorhome pitches at nearby sites are easier to secure outside peak months.
Christchurch is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 16 km north-east from Christchurch into the New Forest National Park. Stop at Burley village for its cider farm and cream teas, then drive on to Lyndhurst, the forest's capital, for the New Forest Heritage Centre. Campervan-friendly car parks are dotted throughout the forest, though height barriers apply at some.
Drive 40 km south-west through Wareham to reach Corfe Castle, a dramatic ruin overlooking the Purbeck Hills. Pause at Studland Bay for its sandy beach and nature reserve. The route follows the A351, which is well-suited to campervans, and Norden Park and Ride offers spacious parking near the castle.
Cover 120 km west along the coast to Exeter, passing through Dorchester and its Roman Town House. Stop at Lyme Regis for fossil hunting along the Jurassic Coast. In Exeter, visit the Royal Albert Memorial Museum. Motorhome service points are available at several campsites along this route.
Travel 160 km north to Bath, taking in Salisbury Cathedral and its 123-metre spire along the way. In Bath, explore the Roman Baths and the Royal Crescent. Campervan parking is available at Bath Marina and Caravan Park, just outside the city centre, making it a convenient base.
Set off 210 km north from Christchurch to explore the Cotswolds. Visit Stow-on-the-Wold for its antique shops and Bourton-on-the-Water for its stone bridges over the River Windrush. The rolling countryside roads are manageable in a campervan, and several farms offer overnight pitches.
Journey 280 km west to Pembrokeshire, stopping at Glastonbury Tor and the cathedral city of Wells en route. In Pembrokeshire, walk the coastal path around St Davids, Britain's smallest city. Freshwater West beach has a large car park suitable for motorhomes, with stunning Atlantic views.

Christchurch and its surrounding Dorset coastline offer a fine selection of campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Many sites provide electric hook-ups, hardstanding pitches, modern shower blocks and waste disposal points. Whether you prefer a pitch near the harbour or a quieter spot in the countryside, you will find well-maintained facilities within easy reach of Christchurch.
Christchurch offers several parking options for larger vehicles. Overnight parking in public car parks is generally not permitted unless signposted otherwise, so plan ahead. The town centre has height-restricted car parks, but dedicated areas nearby can accommodate campervans and motorhomes. Always check local signage for current restrictions before settling in for the night.
I highly recommend renting from Handy! The camper van was absolute perfection for our family road trip with two young children, and its condition was top-notch. At pickup, Handy was incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and accommodating, taking the time to explain all the various systems and how to best operate the vehicle. He was also super responsive and helpful whenever I had quick questions during our trip. I couldn't have asked for a better host or vehicle. Thank you, Handy!
very good experience with the owner Luis. I recommend
Esperienza positiva
