Why choose Luton for your road trip

Luton — a city worth exploring

Luton's Wardown House, Museum and Gallery sits within 47 acres of parkland along the River Lea, housing one of the finest collections of Bedfordshire lace in the country. The town's hat-making heritage shaped its identity for over a century, and you can trace that story at the Hat District, a creative quarter breathing new life into former hat factories. Stockwood Discovery Centre offers free entry to its walled gardens and a remarkable collection of horse-drawn vehicles, while the nearby Someries Castle ruins date back to the 1430s and stand as one of England's earliest brick-built buildings. For a change of scenery, the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty begins just 8 km south, offering gentle walks and sweeping views ideal for a day trip. St Albans sits 19 km to the south-east, home to a magnificent cathedral and Roman ruins, and Bedford is 30 km to the north with its riverside parks and Higgins Gallery. Luton's position beside the M1 motorway makes it a practical base for exploring the Home Counties by motorhome or campervan, with easy connections in every direction. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners in and around Luton, giving you the flexibility to collect your vehicle nearby and set off at your own pace — no depot queues, just a friendly handover and the open road ahead.

Best time to visit

Luton comes alive each May during the Luton International Carnival, one of Europe's largest one-day carnivals, filling the streets with music, dance and colour. The St George's Day Festival in April is another highlight worth timing your trip around. Summer months from June to August bring the longest days and warmest weather, making it a great window for campervan travel through the Chiltern Hills and beyond. Book your Yescapa hire early for the summer period, as peer-to-peer availability is at its most popular. Spring and autumn offer quieter roads and more flexible campsite options around Luton, often at lower prices.

We rented the van for almost 3 weeks and we had a lovely time exploring Spain. The van has everything we needed and working properly. It’s spacious and comfortable for two to sleep. We were a bit worried about the heatwave the country was having and Jeremie managed to buy a double fan for us to sleep, which we highly appreciated. He is very friendly and good with communicating. The van runs smoothly, we just had a message on the screen to top up the oil (which was easy enough to stop at the petrol station and buy one - with Jeremie instructions we were able to do it). We really recommend renting his van for your adventure. ☺️

It was a genuine pleasure travelling in Álvaro’s campervan. Not only was it well maintained and fully equipped, but Álvaro also proved to be an exceptional host—friendly, responsive, and always willing to help. His support played a key role in ensuring that the trip went as smoothly as possible. I would recommend him without hesitation and sincerely hope to have the opportunity to repeat the experience. Thank you very much for everything!
