Peterborough Cathedral, with its remarkable painted wooden ceiling dating back to around 1230, is one of only four such medieval ceilings surviving in all of Europe. This historic city in Cambridgeshire sits at the edge of the Fens, where flat, open landscapes make for easy and enjoyable driving in a campervan or motorhome. You can explore Flag Fen Archaeology Park, a Bronze Age site over 3,000 years old, or wander through the Nene Park Trust grounds stretching along the River Nene. The city centre features Peterborough Museum, housed in a former hospital building from 1816, and the lively Queensgate Shopping Centre. For a change of scenery, the market town of Stamford lies just 20 km to the north-west, while the university city of Cambridge is roughly 65 km to the south. The surrounding fenland countryside is ideal for those who enjoy wide skies and peaceful overnight stops. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in the Peterborough area, giving you the flexibility to pick up your vehicle nearby and set off at your own pace. Whether you are heading into the Fens or using Peterborough as a base for longer adventures, peer-to-peer hire means competitive prices and a personal touch from people who know the region well.
Peterborough comes alive in summer, with the Peterborough Heritage Festival taking place each June and the East of England Showground hosting events throughout July and August. These months offer long daylight hours, perfect for exploring the Fens by campervan. Spring and autumn bring quieter roads and more availability at local campsites, making it easier to book a motorhome through Yescapa at favourable peer-to-peer prices. Even winter has its appeal, with Peterborough's Christmas market drawing visitors to Cathedral Square. Book ahead for the summer months to secure the best choice of vehicles from local owners.
Peterborough is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 65 km south from Peterborough through the flat fenland roads to Cambridge. Stop at the Imperial War Museum Duxford along the way and explore King's College Chapel and the Backs once you arrive. Campervan parking is available at park-and-ride sites on the city outskirts, keeping your visit stress-free.
Drive 50 km west from Peterborough to Rutland Water, one of the largest artificial lakes in England. Enjoy cycling around the reservoir, birdwatching at Egleton Nature Reserve, and visiting Normanton Church on the southern shore. Several campervan-friendly sites sit close to the water's edge.
Just 20 km north-west of Peterborough, Stamford is a beautifully preserved Georgian stone town. Visit Burghley House and its sculpture garden, then stroll along the River Welland. Motorhome parking is straightforward on the town's outskirts, and the compact centre is easy to explore on foot.
Travel 145 km east from Peterborough to reach the Norfolk coastline. Take in the seal colony at Blakeney Point and the wide sandy beach at Holkham. The route passes through King's Lynn, worth a stop for its medieval merchants' houses. Coastal campsites welcome campervans of all sizes.
Head 180 km north-west from Peterborough into the Peak District National Park. Explore Chatsworth House, hike through Dovedale, and visit the spa town of Buxton. Roads narrow in the Peaks, so a smaller motorhome works best. Well-equipped campsites are dotted throughout the park.
Cover 230 km north from Peterborough to reach the Yorkshire Dales. Walk the trails around Malham Cove, cross the Ribblehead Viaduct viewpoint, and explore the market town of Skipton. Campervan pitches are plentiful across the Dales, and the A1 makes the initial drive smooth and direct.

The Peterborough area offers a good range of campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Many sites around the city provide electric hook-ups, hardstanding pitches, and modern shower and toilet blocks. To the west and north, you will find quieter rural sites with generous space for larger vehicles. If you prefer to stay closer to the action, several parks within a short drive of the city centre offer easy access to local attractions.
Peterborough is generally welcoming to larger vehicles, though the city centre has height restrictions on several multi-storey car parks. For motorhomes and campervans, dedicated surface car parks on the outskirts are your best option. Overnight parking in public car parks is not usually permitted, so plan to use a nearby campsite for evening stops. Always check signage for height and length limits before entering any car park.
great van a few interior problems but apart from that all good
check in took 1.40 hr! legible dirty outside with tape repairs to window and mirror paid for gas but when we got there found canister was empty and we had to replace ourselves
Everything was amazing
Great experience renting the Jimny. The owners were brilliant to deal with from start to finish, and the Jeep was in excellent condition. It was perfect for exploring the Algarve. Would definitely recommend and would happily rent from them again!
Clean, well-maintained vehicle that gave us so many great memories! We traveled to many places and drove around 900 km ourselves, and it handled everything flawlessly. Thanks to its size, parking was super easy, we could fit anywhere, and we were able to sleep in spots where a different kind of campervan wouldn't have worked. It is fully equipped with everything provided, even extra games for beach days! The bed and bedding were clean, and it has a really comfortable mattress. The owners were super nice and sweet. Everything went smoothly during both pickup and drop-off, and they were always there to help whenever we needed it, even when we got a bit lost! 😅 Plus point that they were super cool and easy to talk to. P.S. The AC works like a charm!
Sergey's van is great. Really spacious, easy to drive. We had a great trip. Sergey was really nice helpful and was on hand to help with any questions during the trip. He even gave us a lift to the train station in Ljubljana! Would 100% recommend.
