Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Essex

Essex — a region worth exploring

Essex holds the longest pleasure pier in the world at Southend-on-Sea, stretching 2,158 metres into the Thames Estuary and offering a unique starting point for any road trip along the county's 350-mile coastline. From the medieval wool town of Coggeshall to the ancient oyster beds of Mersea Island, Essex blends centuries of maritime heritage with wide-open marshlands and gentle rolling countryside. The distance from Epping Forest in the south-west to Harwich on the north-east coast is roughly 70 miles, while Chelmsford to Colchester covers about 24 miles along the A12 — making it easy to explore several destinations in a single day. Birdwatchers flock to the RSPB Wallasea Island Wild Coast Project, one of the largest coastal habitat creation schemes in Europe, and history enthusiasts can wander the Norman keep of Colchester Castle, built on the foundations of a Roman temple. Flat terrain and well-connected roads make Essex particularly welcoming for larger vehicles, so whether you are in a compact campervan or a full-size motorhome, you can navigate comfortably between coast and countryside. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Essex, choosing from a wide range of campervans and motorhomes that suit your group size, budget, and travel style — all with the personal recommendations that only a local host can provide.

Best time to visit

May to September is the prime window for a campervan trip through Essex, when long daylight hours let you make the most of coastal walks and open-air attractions. The Mersea Island Oyster Festival, usually held in late August, celebrates the area's centuries-old shellfish tradition with tastings and live music. Autumn brings the V Festival legacy events and quieter roads, ideal for a relaxed motorhome tour of the county's market towns. With Yescapa, you can often find better hire rates outside the peak summer weeks, as private owners set their own pricing. Book spring or early autumn for a balance of pleasant weather and wider vehicle availability across Essex.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Essex

Essex is well served by the M25, M11, A12, and A13, giving you quick access from London and connections to the wider motorway network. There are no toll roads within the county, though the Dartford Crossing on the M25 border uses the Dart Charge system — you must pay online by midnight the day after crossing. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.05 tonnes are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways. Many A-roads through Essex are wide and flat, well suited to larger vehicles, but some rural lanes near the coast can be narrow, so plan your route in advance.
