Why choose Cambridge for your road trip

Cambridge — a city worth exploring

Cambridge's River Cam winds through 31 historic college grounds, making it the only city in England where you can punt past 800 years of continuous academic architecture. The Fitzwilliam Museum houses over half a million artworks and antiquities, while the Cambridge University Botanic Garden spans 16 hectares of beautifully curated plant collections. Wander through King's College Chapel, renowned for its fan-vaulted ceiling completed in 1515, or explore the interactive exhibits at the Centre for Computing History. Beyond the colleges, the city opens onto the flat, open landscapes of the Fens — ideal terrain for motorhome travel with wide roads and easy navigation. Newmarket, the home of British horse racing, sits just 21 km to the east, while the cathedral city of Ely is only 25 km to the north, offering a rewarding day trip. Cambridge also makes a brilliant base for exploring the Norfolk and Suffolk coasts, with well-connected A-roads leading out in every direction. If you're planning a trip, hiring a campervan through Yescapa connects you directly with local owners who know the area and can share tips on the best routes and overnight spots. With a range of campervans and motorhomes available for hire in and around Cambridge, you can set off at your own pace and discover East Anglia on your own terms.

Best time to visit

Cambridge is wonderful to visit from late spring through to autumn. The city's famous May Week celebrations — confusingly held in June — bring rowing races and garden parties along the Cam. In July, the Cambridge Folk Festival draws music lovers from across the country. Summer is the busiest season, so booking your campervan early through Yescapa gives you access to competitive peer-to-peer prices and a wider choice of vehicles. Autumn brings golden light over the college courtyards and quieter roads for motorhome touring across the Fens and into Norfolk.

The best option for campervan and motorhome drivers is to use one of the Park & Ride sites on the outskirts. Always check signage for height and length restrictions before parking.

  • Trumpington Park & Ride, 5km south — Located south of Cambridge off the A10, with frequent bus services into the city centre. Large bays available, suitable for bigger vehicles.
  • Milton Park & Ride, 6km north — Situated north of Cambridge near the A10/A14 junction. Spacious car park with good access for motorhomes and campervans.
  • Madingley Road Park & Ride, 4km west — West of the city on the A1303, offering easy access to the M11. Regular buses run to the centre, and the site has ample space for larger vehicles.
  • Newmarket Road Park & Ride, 3km east — East of Cambridge on the A1303, close to the airport. Well-suited for campervans, with regular bus connections into the city.

The hire experience was excellent throughout. The owners were very friendly, accommodating and easy to deal with. We had such a good trip. The van is really well looked after and a pleasure to drive. The owners helped with anything we were unsure of and even gave us tips on where to eat and park up. We would definitely hire through these owners again.
