Ipswich's Wet Dock, built in 1842, was the largest enclosed dock in Europe at the time and remains a focal point of the town's regenerated waterfront. As the county town of Suffolk, Ipswich sits where the River Orwell meets the tidal estuary, making it a natural gateway to the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You can explore Christchurch Mansion, a Tudor house set in 65 acres of parkland with free-entry galleries featuring works by Constable and Gainsborough. The Ipswich Museum on High Street houses natural history and archaeology collections, while the Willis Building, designed by Norman Foster, is one of the earliest examples of high-tech architecture in the UK. Felixstowe, with its long seafront promenade, is just 18 km south-east, and the medieval wool town of Lavenham lies 30 km to the west. The A14 and A12 provide straightforward access for larger vehicles, and the flat Suffolk landscape means easy driving with few challenging gradients. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in and around Ipswich, giving you the flexibility to pick up nearby and set off at your own pace. Peer-to-peer hire means a wider choice of vehicles and a more personal experience than you might expect.
Ipswich comes alive from May to September, when the Suffolk countryside is at its greenest and the coast is ideal for day trips. The Ipswich Music Day, usually held in July, fills Christchurch Park with free live performances, and the Suffolk Show in late May draws crowds to Trinity Park just outside town. Book your campervan early for the summer months, as pitches along the Suffolk coast fill up quickly. Shoulder months like April and October offer quieter roads and more availability on Yescapa, often at lower prices thanks to flexible peer-to-peer hire. Mild autumn weather makes it a fine time to tour the Stour Valley without the busier summer traffic.
Ipswich is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 55 km north-east from Ipswich along the A12 to reach Southwold, a charming coastal town known for its lighthouse and Adnams Brewery. Stop at RSPB Minsmere along the way for birdwatching. Campervan parking is available near the seafront, and Southwold Pier offers quirky amusements and sea views.
Drive 30 km west from Ipswich to Lavenham, one of England's best-preserved medieval villages. Wander past the crooked timber-framed houses on Water Street and visit the grand Church of St Peter and St Paul. Roads are narrow in places, so a smaller campervan works well here. Long Melford is just 5 km further south.
Cover 130 km north from Ipswich to Norwich, stopping at Framlingham Castle and the market town of Bungay en route. Norwich Cathedral and the lanes of the Norwich Market are well worth a full day. Motorhome-friendly parking is available at Norwich Park & Ride sites, making city access easy.
Travel 160 km west from Ipswich to Cambridge via Bury St Edmunds, where the Abbey Gardens and cathedral deserve a stop. In Cambridge, punt along the Backs and visit the Fitzwilliam Museum. Several campsites sit on the city outskirts with full hook-ups and good bus links into the centre.
From Ipswich, head 240 km north-west to explore the North Norfolk Coast. Walk the boardwalk at Holkham Beach, visit the seal colony at Blakeney Point, and sample Cromer crab on the pier. This stretch has plenty of campervan-friendly aires and small campsites right along the coast road.
Set off 280 km north-west from Ipswich towards the Peak District for dramatic moorland and limestone dales. Hike through Dovedale, explore the spa town of Buxton, and visit Chatsworth House. Motorhome pitches are plentiful across the national park, and the A14 and M1 keep the drive straightforward.

The area around Ipswich offers a good range of campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. You will find sites with electric hook-ups, hardstanding pitches, and modern shower blocks within easy reach of the town centre and the Suffolk coast. Several sites sit in peaceful countryside settings, while others are closer to the shoreline, giving you flexibility depending on your plans.
Ipswich has several options for parking larger vehicles, though the town centre car parks can be tight for motorhomes. The Crown Pools car park and the Portman Road area offer more generous bays. Overnight parking in public car parks is generally not permitted, so plan to return to a campsite for the night. Always check height barriers before entering, as many multi-storey car parks have low clearance.
