Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Yorkshire

Yorkshire — a region worth exploring

Yorkshire and the Humber is home to three national parks — the Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors, and the Peak District's northern fringes — making it one of the most landscape-rich regions in England for a road trip. From the medieval city walls of York to the dramatic chalk cliffs at Flamborough Head, the region packs centuries of history into every stretch of road. The distance from Sheffield in the south to Whitby on the North Sea coast is roughly 150 miles, while Leeds to Scarborough covers about 70 miles through rolling farmland and heather-clad moorland. You can follow the winding roads of Buttertubs Pass in the Dales, pause at the ruins of Fountains Abbey near Ripon, or explore the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth — each stop offering something genuinely different. Coastal routes between Bridlington and Staithes are well suited to campervans, with plenty of laybys and smaller sites along the way, while the broader A-roads through the Dales comfortably accommodate a motorhome. The region's mix of compact market towns and wide-open countryside means you are never far from a fresh experience or a welcoming place to park up for the night. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across Yorkshire and the Humber, giving you a wider choice of campervans and pick-up points than a traditional depot — ideal for building a route that fits your plans rather than someone else's timetable.

Best time to visit

May to September is the prime window for exploring Yorkshire and the Humber by campervan, when daylight stretches past nine in the evening and moorland trails are at their best. The Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate each July is a brilliant reason to plan a trip, combining agricultural heritage with local food and live events. Autumn brings the Whitby Goth Weekend in late October, drawing visitors to the atmospheric coastal town. Book ahead for July and August, the busiest months for campsites across the Dales and coast. Outside peak season, Yescapa's peer-to-peer model often means more competitive hire prices, and you will find Yorkshire's quieter lanes even more enjoyable.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Yorkshire

Most roads across Yorkshire and the Humber are toll-free, with the notable exception of the Humber Bridge (payable by card or cash). Motorways such as the M1 and M62 connect the major cities, and motorhomes under 3,500 kg follow standard UK speed limits — 70 mph on motorways, 60 mph on dual carriageways, and 50 mph on single carriageways. Larger vehicles over 3,500 kg are limited to 60 mph on motorways and 50 mph on dual carriageways. Some Dales roads feature single-track sections with passing places, so check your vehicle width before heading into narrower valleys. Service stations are well spaced on the M62 and A1(M).
