Why choose Stocksbridge for your road trip

Stocksbridge — a city worth exploring

Stocksbridge sits at the northern edge of the Peak District National Park, where the River Don carves through the steep-sided valley that once powered the town's steel industry. The former Samuel Fox & Company steelworks, founded in 1842, shaped both the landscape and the community you see today. Stocksbridge is a brilliant base for exploring the surrounding moorland, with Underbank and More Hall reservoirs offering peaceful waterside walks just minutes from the town centre. The Trans Pennine Trail passes nearby, giving you easy access to long-distance cycling and walking routes that stretch coast to coast. For history, Fox Valley Shopping Park occupies part of the old steelworks site, blending the town's industrial heritage with modern amenities. Head south and you reach the Langsett Reservoir, a popular spot for picnics and gentle rambles along the shore. Sheffield city centre is only 16 km to the south-east, while the market town of Penistone lies just 8 km to the west, offering weekly farmers' markets and a charming high street. The roads around Stocksbridge wind through hilly terrain, so a campervan gives you the flexibility to stop wherever the views demand it. With Yescapa, you can hire a motorhome directly from a local owner, meaning you get insider tips on the best routes and parking spots in the area. Whether you want to walk the moors or explore nearby valleys, a campervan hired through our platform puts the whole region within easy reach.

Best time to visit

Stocksbridge comes alive in summer when the surrounding Peak District moorland is at its greenest and the reservoirs are perfect for long evening walks. The Stocksbridge Festival, typically held in July, brings live music, food stalls, and community events to the town. Autumn is equally rewarding, with golden bracken covering the hillsides and quieter roads for campervan touring. If you plan to visit between June and August, booking your motorhome early through Yescapa is a wise move, as peer-to-peer pricing often undercuts traditional hire companies. Spring brings wildflowers to the valley and fewer visitors at Langsett and Underbank reservoirs, making it ideal for a relaxed Stocksbridge getaway.

Parking a larger vehicle in Stocksbridge is manageable if you plan ahead. The town centre has limited space for motorhomes, but several nearby locations cater well to bigger vehicles. Overnight parking in lay-bys is generally discouraged, so we recommend using designated sites. • Underbank Reservoir Lay-by, 2km south — Informal roadside parking near the reservoir with room for larger vehicles. Daytime stopping point for walks.

We had an amazing trip! Rafaela and Carina were so kind, and we couldn’t recommend their van enough 🤩🙏🏼 The van had everything we needed for a proper “van life” experience, and you can also stay at campsites whenever you want!

We hired a motorhome from Cemil for a week to travel around Switzerland. We also visited France, Germany and Liechtenstein. Before the trip Cemil was helpful and responded to questions promptly. On the day of pick up he met us at the train station and the handover was smooth and quick. At the end if the trip it was also a very smooth transition and Cemil kindly drove us back to the airport. The van was great - very easy to drive and everything worked perfectly. All tolls and insurance were covered. We were very happy with the motorhome and would highly recommend renting from Cemil.

We had a great experience hiring this motorhome. Everything went smoothly and we had absolutely zero issues throughout our trip. Fernando kept us informed about everything from the beginning and was very friendly and helpful. He was also very flexible with both the pickup and drop-off times, which made everything much easier. The location is perfect, especially if you're arriving via Prague Airport. We travelled all the way to Hungary and back to Poland, staying at several off-grid locations along the way. We had an amazing time at Lake Balaton in Hungary and also loved our stay at the Pod Opaleńcem campsite in Świeradów-Zdrój, Poland. We would definitely recommend this motorhome hire and would happily rent from Fernando again!
