Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Teesside

Teesside — a region worth exploring

Teesside's Transporter Bridge, one of only six operational transporter bridges in the world, has carried passengers and vehicles across the River Tees since 1911. This industrial heartland turned cultural destination in the north-east of England offers a compelling mix of heritage, coastline, and countryside. From the regenerated Middlesbrough docklands to the ancient woodland of Guisborough Forest, there is plenty to discover at your own pace. The North York Moors National Park sits just 20 km south of Middlesbrough, giving you quick access to open moorland and dramatic valleys. Head 25 km east and you reach the fishing village of Staithes, where Captain Cook once worked as a shop boy. Hartlepool's National Museum of the Royal Navy brings maritime history to life along the waterfront, while the RSPB Saltholme nature reserve provides superb birdwatching on restored wetlands between Stockton-on-Tees and Middlesbrough. The region's compact layout makes it ideal for campervan travel — you can explore coast, town, and moor in a single day without long drives. Motorhome-friendly routes connect the A19 corridor with quieter lanes through the Tees Valley. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across Teesside, choosing from a range of campervans and motorhomes that suit your group size and travel style. It is a flexible, community-driven way to experience this distinctive corner of England.

Best time to visit

May to September is the prime window for a campervan trip around Teesside, with long daylight hours and reliable access to coastal and moorland routes. The Stockton International Riverside Festival in August fills the town centre with street performance and outdoor art, making it a great time to visit. Autumn brings rich colour to Guisborough Forest and quieter roads across the Tees Valley. Booking through Yescapa outside peak summer months often means better availability and more competitive hire prices from local owners. Plan ahead for July and August if you want the widest choice of motorhome or campervan.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Teesside

Teesside sits along the A19, the main dual carriageway linking the region to Sunderland in the north and York in the south. There are no toll roads in the area, so travel is straightforward and cost-free. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways. The A66 runs east to west, connecting Teesside to the A1(M) and onward to the Lake District, and is well suited to larger vehicles. Rest areas and fuel stops are frequent along both routes. Be mindful of height restrictions on some older bridges in town centres.

Both Jesus and Susana were very communicative and made the rental process very easy. The van is basically new in very good condition and easy to handle. It was fun cooking in remote places having a beautiful view and having a large fridge really helped to keep all cool and fresh. We had a nice time with it and would certainly recommend it to others.
