Why choose York for your road trip

York — a city worth exploring

York's city walls stretch over 3.4 kilometres, forming the longest medieval town walls still standing in England. Walking their full circuit gives you a bird's-eye view of a city where Roman, Viking and medieval history sit side by side. The National Railway Museum, home to over 100 locomotives including the record-breaking Mallard, is free to enter and sits just behind the station. York Minster, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in northern Europe, dominates the skyline, while the narrow lanes of The Shambles draw visitors into a streetscape that dates back to the fourteenth century. JORVIK Viking Centre brings the city's Norse past to life through reconstructed scenes and genuine archaeological finds. Beyond the centre, the Yorkshire Dales National Park lies roughly 50 km to the west, and the North York Moors National Park begins around 40 km to the north-east — both are ideal for exploring by campervan. York's compact layout and well-connected roads make it a practical base for longer trips across the north of England. With Yescapa, you can hire a motorhome directly from a local owner, giving you the flexibility to set your own pace and discover the surrounding countryside on your own terms. Whether you are heading for the coast or deeper into the Dales, picking up a campervan in York puts you right where the adventure starts.

Best time to visit

York rewards a visit in any season. The Jorvik Viking Festival in February fills the streets with re-enactments and longship races, while the York Food and Drink Festival each September showcases local producers across the city centre. Summer months from June to August bring the longest days and warmest weather, ideal for campervan touring through the nearby moors and dales. Spring and autumn offer quieter roads and easier campsite availability. With Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing means you can often find a motorhome hire at a better rate outside peak summer, so booking a trip in May or October is well worth considering.
