Wakefield's cathedral, the tallest spire in Yorkshire at 75 metres, has watched over this West Yorkshire city since the 14th century. Once a powerhouse of the wool and coal trades, Wakefield today blends industrial heritage with world-class art. The Hepworth Wakefield, opened in 2011 on the banks of the River Calder, houses an outstanding collection of works by Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore, both born in the surrounding area. A short walk away, the National Coal Mining Museum for England at Caphouse Colliery offers underground tours that bring the region's mining past to life. Families enjoy Pugneys Country Park, a 250-acre lakeside reserve ideal for walking, sailing and picnicking right on the city's southern edge. For a taste of medieval history, Sandal Castle ruins sit on a hilltop overlooking the Calder Valley, the site of a decisive battle during the Wars of the Roses. Leeds is just 15 km to the north, while the Peak District National Park lies roughly 65 km to the south-west, making Wakefield a practical base for exploring both urban and rural Yorkshire. Hiring a campervan through Yescapa connects you with local owners who know the best routes and overnight spots across the county. Whether you pick up a motorhome here or arrive in your own hired campervan, Wakefield rewards you with easy access to motorway links and quieter countryside lanes alike.
Wakefield comes alive in summer, when the Wakefield Festival of Music and Arts fills venues across the city each July. September brings the Rhubarb Festival, celebrating the famous Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb grown in the nearby Rhubarb Triangle. Booking a campervan for these months is wise, as local sites fill up quickly with visitors. Spring and autumn offer comfortable driving conditions and quieter campsites, ideal for exploring at your own pace. With Yescapa, you can often find better rates on motorhome hire outside peak season, thanks to flexible pricing set by individual owners. Plan ahead for bank holiday weekends, when Wakefield's parks and attractions draw day-trippers from across West Yorkshire.

Just 15 km north, Leeds offers the Royal Armouries Museum and Kirkgate Market, one of the largest covered markets in Europe. Park your campervan at one of the city-fringe sites and hop on the bus into the centre. A quick overnight trip with plenty to fill a full day.
Head 55 km north to Harrogate for the famous Turkish Baths and RHS Garden Harlow Carr. The route passes through rolling countryside with well-signed laybys. Motorhome-friendly parking is available near the Valley Gardens, making this an easy short break from Wakefield.
Travel 105 km north-east to York and explore York Minster and the Jorvik Viking Centre. The drive follows the A64 through the Vale of York, with campervan stopovers near Tadcaster along the way. Allow time to walk the medieval city walls for views across the rooftops.
Around 130 km north-west from Wakefield, the Yorkshire Dales reward you with Malham Cove and Aysgarth Falls. Campsites with full hook-ups dot the valleys, and narrow lanes add character to the drive. Stock up on supplies in Skipton before heading deeper into the dales.

Wakefield sits between the urban centres of West Yorkshire and open countryside, so you will find a good mix of rural and semi-urban campsites within easy reach. Many sites cater for both campervans and motorhomes, offering electric hook-ups, hardstanding pitches, shower blocks and waste disposal points. If you prefer a greener setting, head south towards the fringes of the Rhubarb Triangle, where several farm-based sites welcome touring vehicles.
Wakefield offers several options for parking larger vehicles. The council operates pay-and-display car parks in the city centre, though height barriers may restrict motorhome access at multi-storey sites. For overnight stays, dedicated aire-style facilities and campsite parking on the outskirts are your best bet. Always check signage for any vehicle length or height restrictions before pulling in.
Fantastic rental, they were so helpful and got us all set up for our first ever campervan trip. The van was spotless and practically brand new. Everything was so easy to use and we just sent up the bed each day as we set off for each new place.
Easy to the find location of the vehicle it was a 20 min journey from the airport. We went over all the features quickly was easy to understand. I had a great few days using the camper and would definitely use again. Thanks
Very nice car rental. Very easy to deal with.
Wow - couldn’t recommend renting this little van from Carlos anymore! Incredible experience and Carlos is great. Thank you so much
La caravana está en excelentes condiciones y Juan Miguel lo hace todo muy fácil. La caravana tiene todo lo necesario y más y la comunicación fue perfecta. La recomiendo sin duda!
We absolutely loved our time with Javier’s Fiat campervan and would happily recommend it. From the outset, Javier was incredibly helpful and accommodating, answering all our questions and requests, arriving exactly when agreed and giving us an excellent, thorough handover. The van itself was brilliantly equipped, stylish, comfortable and surprisingly spacious, with loads of clever storage. It genuinely felt like a little home on wheels rather than simply a rental camper. Another big plus is just how user-friendly everything is. Even if you have little or no previous campervan experience, you could feel completely confident using it. Javier provided clear instructions for all the important systems — water, pumps, lighting, electrics and general operation — and everything was incredibly straightforward and simple to use. Nothing felt complicated or intimidating. We travelled both on-grid and completely off-grid, and it handled both perfectly. The solar and battery system worked brilliantly, the fridge stayed perfectly cold, and the enormous water capacity was a massive bonus — we showered normally throughout our trip and never managed to run out of water! And the shower itself deserves a special mention: such a clever use of space and genuinely one of our favourite features. On the road it was equally impressive. It drove really well, was surprisingly economical on fuel, and its size was absolutely perfect for travelling around Spain. We took it through little roads and villages without any drama and could generally park it in a normal car-sized space — a huge advantage compared with travelling in a large motorhome. The interior design is super chic and homely, the layout has been really well thought through, and there was more than enough space and storage for everything we needed. Overall, fantastic value for money, a great owner and a fabulous little campervan that gave us exactly the adventure we wanted. Whether you’re an experienced campervan traveller or trying one for the first time, it’s an incredibly easy and enjoyable van to travel in. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would absolutely rent it again. Highly recommended — thank you, Javier! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
