North Yorkshire stretches across 3,341 square miles, making it the largest ceremonial county in England and a region built for exploration on four wheels. The North York Moors National Park alone covers 554 square miles of heather moorland, while the Yorkshire Dales National Park to the west offers limestone pavements, waterfalls, and sweeping valleys. From Whitby, where the ruins of the 7th-century abbey overlook the harbour, to the elegant spa town of Harrogate roughly 65 miles inland, the landscape shifts from rugged coastline to rolling farmland and dramatic fell country. The drive from York to Scarborough covers around 40 miles and takes you through the Howardian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty home to Castle Howard. North Yorkshire's road network is well suited to campervans and motorhomes, with wide A-roads connecting market towns like Ripon, Thirsk, and Helmsley, and quieter lanes winding through the Dales. Coastal routes along the Heritage Coast between Staithes and Filey pass through fishing villages and clifftop car parks with sea views. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across North Yorkshire, choosing from a range of vehicles to match your group size and travel style. Whether you want a compact campervan for a weekend on the moors or a fully equipped motorhome for a fortnight touring the Dales, peer-to-peer hire means more choice and a personal touch from people who know the area.
North Yorkshire is wonderful from late spring through autumn. May and June bring wildflower displays across the Dales and longer daylight hours for coastal walks. The Great Yorkshire Show, held each July in Harrogate, is one of England's premier agricultural events and well worth timing your trip around. Autumn transforms the North York Moors into a carpet of purple heather, typically peaking in August and September. Campsites across North Yorkshire are generally open from March to October, with the widest availability in summer. Booking through Yescapa outside peak school holidays can offer better value, as peer-to-peer hire prices tend to be more flexible in shoulder months.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Follow North Yorkshire's coastline from Staithes south to Filey, roughly 130 km of clifftop roads and fishing villages. Stop at Robin Hood's Bay for a wander through its steep lanes, then on to Scarborough for fish and chips by the harbour. Plenty of campervan-friendly parking along the route.
A 180 km circuit through the North York Moors starting from Helmsley. Visit Rievaulx Abbey, cross the moors via Hutton-le-Hole, and reach Whitby Abbey on the coast. Return inland through Pickering and its steam railway. Motorhome service points are available at several stops along the way.
Begin in Skipton and wind 290 km through the heart of the Dales. Take in Malham Cove's limestone amphitheatre, Aysgarth Falls, and the market town of Hawes, home to the Wensleydale Creamery. Roads suit campervans well, with campsites dotted through each dale from Swaledale to Ribblesdale.
A 350 km route linking York, Harrogate, Ripon, and Richmond before heading east to the coast at Whitby. Explore York Minster, the Fountains Abbey UNESCO site near Ripon, and Richmond Castle. This varied route through North Yorkshire suits a motorhome with plenty of overnight options.
Combine the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors in one 480 km journey. Start in Settle, cross to Leyburn, then traverse the Vale of Mowbray to reach the Moors at Osmotherley. End at the coast in Scarborough. A campervan gives you the flexibility to linger in quieter valleys.
This 550 km route covers the full breadth of North Yorkshire, from the Dales town of Ingleton to the coastal resort of Whitby, looping through Northallerton, Thirsk, and the Howardian Hills. Visit Castle Howard, Byland Abbey, and Sutton Bank's famous viewpoint. Ideal for a longer motorhome adventure.

North Yorkshire offers a superb range of campsites spread from the Dales to the coast. You will find sites with full electric hook-ups, hardstanding pitches for motorhomes, and modern shower and toilet blocks. Many coastal sites near Whitby and Scarborough have sea views, while inland options in the Dales and Moors provide peaceful settings beside rivers and woodland. Several sites welcome campervans of all sizes and offer waste disposal and fresh water points, making longer tours straightforward.
North Yorkshire's main routes include the A1(M) motorway running north–south through the western side of the county, which is toll-free. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.05 tonnes are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways and motorways. Many roads through the Dales and Moors are single-track with passing places, so a smaller campervan can be easier to manoeuvre on these stretches. The A64 connects York to Scarborough and is well maintained with regular lay-bys. Watch for height restrictions on some older bridges in market towns, and always check your vehicle dimensions before heading into narrow valleys.
Muchas gracias. Gary y Michelle
Lovely experience and fantastic van. Clean and worked very well. Leonardo and Eleanora were very friendly and helpful. One small feedback is the fridge did not work very well but otherwise its a great van.
Muy buena experiencia. Ana nos ha tratado muy bien.
Proprietários espetaculares e super atenciosos. Autocaravana estava impecável, super confortável, excelente condução. Painéis solares dão autonomia total. Tudo impecável.
We had an amazing trip! Rafaela and Carina were so kind, and we couldn’t recommend their van enough 🤩🙏🏼 The van had everything we needed for a proper “van life” experience, and you can also stay at campsites whenever you want!
We hired a motorhome from Cemil for a week to travel around Switzerland. We also visited France, Germany and Liechtenstein. Before the trip Cemil was helpful and responded to questions promptly. On the day of pick up he met us at the train station and the handover was smooth and quick. At the end if the trip it was also a very smooth transition and Cemil kindly drove us back to the airport. The van was great - very easy to drive and everything worked perfectly. All tolls and insurance were covered. We were very happy with the motorhome and would highly recommend renting from Cemil.
