Why choose Kingston-upon-Hull for your road trip

Kingston-upon-Hull — a city worth exploring

Kingston-upon-Hull sits where the River Hull meets the Humber Estuary, making it the only city in England named after two rivers. Commonly known as Hull, this East Yorkshire port city has reinvented itself as a cultural destination since earning the UK City of Culture title in 2017. The Deep, one of the deepest aquariums in Europe, draws visitors to the waterfront with its striking angular architecture and over 3,500 marine creatures. Nearby, Hull Minster — the largest parish church in England by floor area — anchors the characterful Old Town, where narrow lanes and Georgian facades reward a slow wander. The Ferens Art Gallery houses works by artists from Canaletto to David Hockney, while the Humber Street Gallery showcases contemporary pieces in a converted warehouse. For a change of scenery, the Yorkshire Wolds lie just 25 km to the north, offering gentle chalk hills ideal for a scenic drive, and the seaside resort of Bridlington is only 48 km northeast along the coast. Hull's flat terrain and wide approach roads make it particularly easy to navigate in a larger vehicle, and the city's position on the A63 and M62 corridor provides quick access to the rest of northern England. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from a local owner, giving you the flexibility to explore Hull and the surrounding Holderness coast at your own pace. It is a practical and personal way to discover a city that consistently surprises.

Best time to visit

Hull comes alive in late summer when the Hull Fair arrives each October — one of Europe's largest travelling funfairs, running for over 700 years. The Freedom Festival in early September fills the city centre with free music, theatre, and street art. For campervan travel, the months from May to September offer the longest daylight hours and the most comfortable conditions for coastal drives along the Holderness shoreline. Book your motorhome through Yescapa during spring or early autumn to enjoy quieter campsites and competitive peer-to-peer hire rates from local owners in the Hull area.

Where to park your motorhome

Hull is relatively straightforward for parking larger vehicles, thanks to its flat layout and wide roads. Several Park & Ride facilities on the city's outskirts accept larger vehicles during the day, making it easy to visit the centre without navigating narrow Old Town streets.

  • Priory Park & Ride, 5km west — Located off the A63 on the western approach to Hull, with regular bus services into the city centre. Suitable for larger vehicles during operating hours.
  • The Deep Car Park, 1km southeast — Pay-and-display car park beside The Deep aquarium on the Humber waterfront. Height barriers may apply, so check in advance for motorhome access.
  • Walton Street Car Park, 1km north — A large open-air car park close to the city centre with space for higher vehicles. Convenient for exploring Hull Minster and the Old Town on foot.
