Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Nottinghamshire

Nottinghamshire — a region worth exploring

Nottinghamshire stretches across 2,160 square kilometres of central England, where the ancient Sherwood Forest — once spanning over 100,000 acres in medieval times — still shelters the Major Oak, a tree estimated to be between 800 and 1,000 years old. From the elegant market town of Southwell, home to Southwell Minster with its famous medieval stone carvings known as the Leaves of Southwell, to the grand ducal estates of the Dukeries around Clumber Park and Thoresby Hall, the county rewards slow, unhurried exploration. Nottingham itself sits roughly 50 km south of Sheffield and about 85 km east of Birmingham, making it a well-connected starting point for touring the East Midlands by road. Head north and you will find the market town of Retford and the historic priory town of Worksop, while to the south the Vale of Belvoir offers rolling farmland and the imposing Belvoir Castle. Nottinghamshire's roads are largely flat or gently undulating, which makes driving a motorhome or campervan comfortable even for first-timers. Country lanes wind between villages, and A-roads connect the main towns without the stress of heavy motorway traffic. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across Nottinghamshire, choosing from a range of vehicles that suit your group size and travel style — a genuinely personal way to discover this rewarding corner of England.

Best time to visit

May to September is the prime window for a campervan trip through Nottinghamshire, when long daylight hours let you make the most of outdoor attractions like Sherwood Forest and Clumber Park. The Robin Hood Festival, usually held in Sherwood Forest each August, brings live performances and medieval re-enactments that are well worth timing your visit around. October's Goose Fair in Nottingham, one of Europe's oldest travelling fairs dating back over 700 years, is another highlight. Campsites across the county are generally open from Easter through to late October, with the widest choice of pitches available in summer. Through Yescapa, you can often find more competitive hire rates in spring and early autumn, when demand eases and owners offer flexible pricing.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Nottinghamshire

Nottinghamshire is well served by the M1 motorway running along its western edge and the A1 to the east, both offering straightforward north–south travel for larger vehicles. There are no toll roads within the county itself, though the nearby M6 Toll in the West Midlands is a paid route worth noting if you are heading further afield. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways and motorways. The A46, A52 and A617 link the main towns efficiently, and most A-roads have comfortable lane widths for campervans. Rest areas and fuel stations are plentiful along the M1 and A1 corridors.
