Why choose Coalville for your road trip

Coalville — a city worth exploring

Coalville sits at the edge of the National Forest, a landscape project that has transformed over 200 square miles of the English Midlands with more than nine million newly planted trees since 1995. The town makes a practical base for exploring Leicestershire's quieter countryside, with Bardon Hill — the county's highest point at 278 metres — rising just to the south-west. History fans can spend a morning at Snibston Colliery Park, where the former coal mine's headstocks still stand as a reminder of the area's industrial heritage, before heading to the ruins of Whitwick Castle, a scheduled monument dating back to the 12th century. Families often make a beeline for Conkers, the National Forest visitor centre in nearby Moira, roughly 16 km to the south-west, which offers woodland trails and adventure play areas. The market town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch is only 7 km south, home to the impressive Ashby de la Zouch Castle managed by English Heritage. Coalville's central position in the East Midlands means the Peak District, Rutland Water and Sherwood Forest are all within easy reach by campervan, and the roads around the National Forest are generally wide and well-surfaced — ideal for motorhome travel. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from a local owner, giving you insider tips on the best routes and overnight spots across this rewarding corner of England.

Best time to visit

Coalville and the National Forest are enjoyable year-round, though late spring through to early autumn offers the longest daylight hours for exploring woodland trails. The Timber Festival, held each July in Feanedock near the National Forest, celebrates woodland culture with live music, art and outdoor workshops — well worth timing your trip around. Autumn brings spectacular colour to the forest canopy, making it a wonderful season for a campervan tour. With Yescapa, you can often find better hire rates outside the summer peak, and booking a few weeks ahead gives you the widest choice of vehicles from local owners near Coalville.

We had an amazing trip! Rafaela and Carina were so kind, and we couldn’t recommend their van enough 🤩🙏🏼 The van had everything we needed for a proper “van life” experience, and you can also stay at campsites whenever you want!

We hired a motorhome from Cemil for a week to travel around Switzerland. We also visited France, Germany and Liechtenstein. Before the trip Cemil was helpful and responded to questions promptly. On the day of pick up he met us at the train station and the handover was smooth and quick. At the end if the trip it was also a very smooth transition and Cemil kindly drove us back to the airport. The van was great - very easy to drive and everything worked perfectly. All tolls and insurance were covered. We were very happy with the motorhome and would highly recommend renting from Cemil.

We had a great experience hiring this motorhome. Everything went smoothly and we had absolutely zero issues throughout our trip. Fernando kept us informed about everything from the beginning and was very friendly and helpful. He was also very flexible with both the pickup and drop-off times, which made everything much easier. The location is perfect, especially if you're arriving via Prague Airport. We travelled all the way to Hungary and back to Poland, staying at several off-grid locations along the way. We had an amazing time at Lake Balaton in Hungary and also loved our stay at the Pod Opaleńcem campsite in Świeradów-Zdrój, Poland. We would definitely recommend this motorhome hire and would happily rent from Fernando again!
