Why choose Chesterfield for your road trip

Chesterfield — a city worth exploring

Chesterfield's famous Crooked Spire at the Church of St Mary and All Saints twists 45 degrees and leans nearly 3 metres from its true centre, making it one of the most recognisable landmarks in the East Midlands. This market town in Derbyshire sits at the gateway to the Peak District National Park, giving you easy access to rolling hills, limestone dales and open moorland — ideal terrain for a campervan adventure. Stroll through the open-air Chesterfield Market, one of the largest in England, held every Monday, Friday and Saturday in the town centre. The Pomegranate Theatre, one of the oldest civic theatres in the country, offers a packed programme of live performances, while Chesterfield Museum and Art Gallery traces the town's history from Roman times to the industrial age. Hardwick Hall, the grand Elizabethan country house managed by the National Trust, lies just 15 km to the south-east, and the spa town of Buxton is roughly 30 km to the west along the A6. The surrounding roads are well suited to motorhome travel, with wide A-roads connecting Chesterfield to the M1 motorway and quieter lanes leading into the Peaks. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan directly from local owners in the area, which means flexible pick-up arrangements and genuine tips on the best routes through Derbyshire's countryside.

Best time to visit

Chesterfield comes alive in summer when the Medieval Fun Day fills the town centre each July with costumed re-enactments and craft stalls. The Peak District on your doorstep is at its greenest from May to September, perfect for parking up your campervan and exploring the trails. Autumn brings the Chesterfield Food and Drink Festival, usually held in October, celebrating local Derbyshire produce. Book your motorhome hire through Yescapa well ahead for the summer months, when peer-to-peer prices still tend to be friendlier than traditional hire companies. Spring and winter each have their own appeal — quieter campsites and crisp walks across the moors.

Where to park your motorhome

Chesterfield offers several car parks that can accommodate larger vehicles, though it is worth checking height barriers before entering multi-storey facilities. Overnight parking in a motorhome on public roads is generally permitted unless local signage states otherwise, but dedicated aires or overnight stops are limited in the town centre. Using a nearby campsite for overnight stays is the most reliable option.

  • Saltergate Multi-Storey Car Park, Adjacent to the city — Central location near the Crooked Spire; check height restrictions as upper levels may not suit taller vehicles.
  • Rose Hill Car Park, 1km north — Open-air car park with good clearance for campervans. Short walk to the town centre and market.
  • Chesterfield Football Club Car Park, 2km west — Available on non-match days; flat surface with ample space for motorhomes.
  • Holmebrook Valley Park Car Park, 3km southwest — Free car park beside the park with generous bays. Convenient for accessing green spaces south-west of the centre.

We rented this camper van for a two-week trip through the Alps and southern france, it was fantastic from start to finish. The van was reliable and easy to drive, even on the steep, winding alpine mountain roads. It also performed exceptionally well on the motorways, with cruise control making the longer journeys comfortable and stress-free. The layout was perfect for two people. The rear seating folds out to a bed and pop-top roof bed provided plenty of space and privacy when sleeping. During the day, the seating area and well-equipped kitchen made the van feel comfortable and practical, while the retractable awning was great for relaxing outside on warm evenings. The owners were incredibly friendly and welcoming. On arrival, they took the time to explain all the features of the van and made sure we were comfortable before setting off. The return process was just as easy and straightforward. Overall, this is a fantastic camper van owned by a lovely family. We had an amazing trip and would highly recommend both the van and its owners to anyone looking for a memorable campervan adventure. We would happily rent from them again in the future.

Incredibly easy- Hector was there to talk us through everything. He was happy to answer all of our questions and gave us excellent practical advice. We felt fully supported abd it gave us a real confidence boost when we took control of the camper. We had to contact Hector during out trip sbout the van and he was on hand and easy to engage with. Ditto with our drop off. We loved using the camper: it was confortable and easily accommodated our family of 5 (including two teenagers!). It was a wonderful way to explore the Basque Country and we would definitely be up for doing it again.

Tuvimos una gran semana con la furgo, yo y dos hijos adultos. El dueño Samu fue de mucha ayuda por mensajes de texto para extra preguntas mientras estuvimos fuera, y nos llevó a la estación después de devolver la furgo
