Why choose Derby for your road trip

Derby — a city worth exploring

Derby's Silk Mill, widely regarded as the world's first factory, began production in 1721 and now houses the Museum of Making on the UNESCO World Heritage Derwent Valley Mills site. The city sits along the River Derwent in the East Midlands, offering easy access to the Peak District National Park just 30 km to the north and the historic market town of Ashbourne 21 km to the northwest. Derby Cathedral, with its 65-metre tower dating back to the 16th century, dominates the skyline, while the Derby Museum and Art Gallery on The Strand showcases works by Joseph Wright of Derby. For families, Markeaton Park provides over 200 acres of green space on the city's western edge. The Quad arts centre in the Market Place hosts independent cinema and contemporary exhibitions year-round. Derby's central position in England makes it a superb base for exploring the Midlands by road, with well-connected A-roads and motorways leading in every direction. The surrounding countryside is ideal for campervan travel, with rolling hills, reservoir-side stops, and quiet lanes through Derbyshire villages. Through Yescapa, you can hire a motorhome or campervan directly from local owners in the Derby area, giving you the flexibility to set off at your own pace without the formality of a traditional depot. It is a practical, personal way to begin your next adventure.

Best time to visit

Derby comes alive in late June during the Derby Festé, a free outdoor arts festival filling the city centre with street theatre, music, and spectacle. Autumn brings the Derby Folk Festival in October, perfect for a weekend campervan trip with a cultural focus. Summer months from June to August offer the longest days for exploring the Peak District, and you will find plenty of campsite availability if you book ahead through Yescapa, where peer-to-peer pricing often works out more affordable than traditional hire. Spring is equally rewarding, with quieter roads and wildflower-filled dales ideal for motorhome touring.

An absolute 10/10 experience from start to finish! The owners were exceptionally professional, super friendly, and made everything from initial contact to booking and collection completely seamless. Meeting their beloved camper van, 'Olaf,' was the highlight of our trip. As first-time drivers of anything larger than an SUV, we were initially nervous, but Olaf completely surprised us—being fully automatic and featuring Android Auto infotainment system, he was an absolute breeze to drive and got us to our destinations hassle-free. The camper is fully equipped with everything you could possibly need for a short getaway, and honestly, you could easily stay much longer. If we ever find ourselves back in France, we would love to take Olaf out for another spin!

We absolutely loved our time in the caddy! Everything was great, from the collection, the functionality and the communication. The van is small but mighty, the owners have thought of every little detail (sink, shower, storage, kitchen, and a good sized comfy bed). We highly recommend using Yescapa and hiring this van- perfect for your dolomites adventure!
