Why choose Alfreton for your road trip

Alfreton — a city worth exploring

Alfreton's market charter dates back to 1251, making it one of the oldest market towns in Derbyshire. Sitting at the gateway to the Amber Valley, this compact town offers easy access to some of England's finest countryside and heritage sites. The Midland Railway – Butterley, just 5 km south, lets you ride restored steam trains through the Amber Valley, while Wingfield Manor, a dramatic 15th-century ruin 4 km to the west, once held Mary, Queen of Scots as a prisoner. Crich Tramway Village, 10 km to the north-west, houses the National Tramway Museum with over 60 vintage trams from around the world. For green spaces closer to town, Alfreton Park provides 32 acres of parkland with a restored orangery and walled garden. The Peak District National Park begins roughly 20 km to the north, and the city of Nottingham lies about 25 km to the south-east, giving you plenty of scope for day trips. The surrounding roads are well suited to larger vehicles, with wide A-roads connecting the main attractions and ample laybys along the route. If you're planning to explore this part of the East Midlands by campervan or motorhome, Yescapa connects you with local owners who know the area and can share tips on the best routes and overnight spots. Hiring a campervan through the platform means you can set your own pace and discover Derbyshire's heritage towns, country estates and rolling hills on your own terms.

Best time to visit

Alfreton comes alive in summer when the Midland Railway – Butterley runs its busiest timetable of steam galas and themed events from June through August. The Alfreton and District Civic Society organises heritage walks in spring, ideal for exploring the town on foot before heading out in your campervan. Autumn brings golden colours to the Amber Valley and quieter roads, perfect for motorhome touring without the summer crowds. Booking through Yescapa outside peak season often means more choice and better value from local owners. Plan ahead for July and August if you prefer warmer weather and longer daylight hours for driving.

An absolute 10/10 experience from start to finish! The owners were exceptionally professional, super friendly, and made everything from initial contact to booking and collection completely seamless. Meeting their beloved camper van, 'Olaf,' was the highlight of our trip. As first-time drivers of anything larger than an SUV, we were initially nervous, but Olaf completely surprised us—being fully automatic and featuring Android Auto infotainment system, he was an absolute breeze to drive and got us to our destinations hassle-free. The camper is fully equipped with everything you could possibly need for a short getaway, and honestly, you could easily stay much longer. If we ever find ourselves back in France, we would love to take Olaf out for another spin!

We absolutely loved our time in the caddy! Everything was great, from the collection, the functionality and the communication. The van is small but mighty, the owners have thought of every little detail (sink, shower, storage, kitchen, and a good sized comfy bed). We highly recommend using Yescapa and hiring this van- perfect for your dolomites adventure!
