Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Oregon

Oregon — a region worth exploring

Oregon's Pacific Coast stretches for 584 km, and every single kilometre is publicly accessible — a rarity among US states that makes it a dream for road-trip exploration. From the towering sea stacks at Cannon Beach to the volcanic landscapes of Crater Lake National Park, the state packs an extraordinary range of scenery into a manageable area. Portland to Bend is roughly 280 km via US-97, crossing the Cascade Range and shifting from lush rainforest to high desert in a matter of hours. Head south from Astoria to Brookings along the coast and you will cover around 580 km of winding clifftop roads, passing the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, Cape Perpetua and the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor. Inland, the Painted Hills display layers of ancient volcanic ash in reds, golds and blacks, while the Columbia River Gorge offers Multnomah Falls and over 90 other waterfalls within a single river canyon. Oregon's diverse terrain — coastal bluffs, mountain passes and open desert — suits both compact campervans and larger motorhomes, with well-maintained roads and plentiful overnight stops throughout. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across Oregon, choosing from a wide variety of vehicles to match your route and group size. It is a practical, peer-to-peer way to get on the road and discover everything Oregon has waiting for you.

Best time to visit

June to September is the prime window for a campervan trip in Oregon, with warm, dry days ideal for both coastal drives and mountain trails. July brings the Oregon Country Fair near Eugene, a lively celebration of arts, music and local culture. In September, the Pendleton Round-Up draws crowds to eastern Oregon for one of North America's oldest rodeo events. Spring and autumn offer quieter roads and lower hire rates — a real advantage when you book through Yescapa, where peer-to-peer pricing often undercuts traditional operators. Winter travel is possible in lower-elevation areas, though Cascade passes may require chains.

Oregon has no toll roads, so you can travel the entire state without worrying about toll booths or passes. Interstate 5 runs north–south through the Willamette Valley, while Interstate 84 follows the Columbia River Gorge eastward. Speed limits for motorhomes and larger vehicles are generally 90 km/h (55 mph) on highways and 105 km/h (65 mph) on rural interstates, though always check posted signs. Mountain passes on US-20 and US-26 can see winter closures, so check ODOT TripCheck before setting off.
