Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Florida

Florida — a region worth exploring

Florida's Overseas Highway stretches 182 km across 44 bridges linking the mainland to Key West, making it one of the most remarkable driving routes in the world. From the white-sand shores of Clearwater Beach on the Gulf Coast to the rocket launches at Kennedy Space Center on the Atlantic side, the state offers an extraordinary range of experiences across a surprisingly vast area — Miami to Pensacola is roughly 1,050 km. You can paddle through the mangrove waterways of Everglades National Park, explore the art deco architecture of Miami's South Beach, or wander the cobblestone lanes of St Augustine, the oldest European-established settlement in the United States. Florida's flat terrain and well-maintained roads make it particularly well suited to campervan and motorhome travel, with no mountain passes to navigate and a generous network of state parks offering full hook-up pitches. The subtropical climate means you can travel comfortably for much of the year, and the coastline — stretching over 2,170 km — ensures a beach is never far away. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across Florida, giving you the flexibility to collect your vehicle in cities like Orlando, Tampa, or Jacksonville and set off at your own pace. Whether you are drawn to the coral reefs of John Pennekamp State Park or the wild beauty of Big Cypress National Preserve, Florida rewards those who take the time to explore by road.

Best time to visit

Florida is a year-round destination for campervan travel, with mild winters drawing visitors from November through to March — ideal for exploring the Everglades or the Keys without the summer humidity. Spring brings events like the Daytona 500 in February and the Gasparilla Pirate Festival in Tampa each January. Summer is perfect for Atlantic coast beaches and longer daylight hours. Book early for the winter high season, when demand peaks. Through Yescapa, you benefit from peer-to-peer pricing set by individual owners across Florida, so you can often find competitive hire rates even during busier months.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Florida

Florida's major motorways — including Interstate 95 along the Atlantic coast and Interstate 75 running north to south through the interior — are toll-free, but several key routes such as Florida's Turnpike and the Sawgrass Expressway use electronic tolling via SunPass or Toll-by-Plate. There are no toll booths accepting cash on most newer roads, so fitting a SunPass transponder is worthwhile. Speed limits for motorhomes over 5.4 tonnes are generally capped at 55 mph on rural roads and 65 mph on motorways. Rest areas with free overnight parking are available on many interstates, though stays are limited to a few hours.
