Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Colorado

Colorado — a region worth exploring

Colorado's Trail Ridge Road climbs to 3,713 metres above sea level, making it the highest continuous paved road in North America and a bucket-list drive for anyone touring by campervan. From the red-rock formations of Garden of the Gods near Colorado Springs to the towering sand dunes of Great Sand Dunes National Park, the state packs an extraordinary range of landscapes into its borders. Denver to Durango covers roughly 540 km through the heart of the Rocky Mountains, while the 380 km stretch from Boulder to Telluride crosses several high passes that reward you with sweeping alpine views. Mesa Verde National Park preserves ancient cliff dwellings dating back over 700 years, and Rocky Mountain National Park offers more than 480 km of hiking trails alongside elk-filled meadows and glacial lakes. Colorado's well-maintained network of scenic byways connects mountain towns, river canyons and wide-open plains, giving you the freedom to shape each day around your own interests. Whether you fancy fishing on the Arkansas River or cycling through Aspen, there is always something new around the next bend. With Yescapa, you hire your motorhome or campervan directly from local owners across Colorado, choosing from a wide variety of vehicles that suit every group size and travel style. It is a peer-to-peer approach that keeps things personal, flexible and often more affordable than traditional hire companies.

Best time to visit

Summer, from June to September, is the most popular season for a campervan trip in Colorado, when Trail Ridge Road and most high-altitude passes are fully open. The Telluride Bluegrass Festival in June draws music lovers from across the country, while the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo each August offers a taste of local culture. With Yescapa, you can often find better rates by booking in the shoulder months of May or October, when autumn colours light up the aspen groves and campsites across Colorado are quieter. Planning ahead for peak summer weekends helps you secure the ideal vehicle from a local owner.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Colorado

Colorado's interstate highways, including I-25 and I-70, are toll-free for most stretches, though the I-70 Mountain Express Lane west of Denver uses variable tolling — you can pay via an ExpressToll transponder or online. Speed limits for motorhomes and larger vehicles are generally 105 km/h on interstates and 65–90 km/h on rural roads, so check signage as you go. Mountain passes such as Loveland Pass and Independence Pass may have steep gradients and tight bends, and some restrict vehicles over a certain length. Rest areas along I-70 and I-25 are well spaced and often include facilities suitable for campervans.

We rented this camper van for a two-week trip through the Alps and southern france, it was fantastic from start to finish. The van was reliable and easy to drive, even on the steep, winding alpine mountain roads. It also performed exceptionally well on the motorways, with cruise control making the longer journeys comfortable and stress-free. The layout was perfect for two people. The rear seating folds out to a bed and pop-top roof bed provided plenty of space and privacy when sleeping. During the day, the seating area and well-equipped kitchen made the van feel comfortable and practical, while the retractable awning was great for relaxing outside on warm evenings. The owners were incredibly friendly and welcoming. On arrival, they took the time to explain all the features of the van and made sure we were comfortable before setting off. The return process was just as easy and straightforward. Overall, this is a fantastic camper van owned by a lovely family. We had an amazing trip and would highly recommend both the van and its owners to anyone looking for a memorable campervan adventure. We would happily rent from them again in the future.

Incredibly easy- Hector was there to talk us through everything. He was happy to answer all of our questions and gave us excellent practical advice. We felt fully supported abd it gave us a real confidence boost when we took control of the camper. We had to contact Hector during out trip sbout the van and he was on hand and easy to engage with. Ditto with our drop off. We loved using the camper: it was confortable and easily accommodated our family of 5 (including two teenagers!). It was a wonderful way to explore the Basque Country and we would definitely be up for doing it again.

Tuvimos una gran semana con la furgo, yo y dos hijos adultos. El dueño Samu fue de mucha ayuda por mensajes de texto para extra preguntas mientras estuvimos fuera, y nos llevó a la estación después de devolver la furgo
