Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Utah

Utah — a region worth exploring

Utah is home to the Mighty Five — Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef and Zion — five national parks packed into a single state, making it one of the most rewarding destinations in the world for a road trip. From Salt Lake City to Moab, the distance is roughly 370 km, while Zion National Park sits about 490 km south-west of the capital, giving you a sense of the scale involved. Red-rock deserts, deep slot canyons and towering hoodoos define the landscape, and the well-maintained highway network means both campervans and larger motorhomes can travel comfortably between parks. Beyond the famous five, you can explore Goblin Valley State Park, the otherworldly Bonneville Salt Flats or the alpine trails of the Wasatch Range near Park City. Monument Valley, straddling the Utah–Arizona border, offers some of the most iconic scenery in North America. Distances between stops are generous, so having your own vehicle is essential — and that is exactly where Yescapa fits in. Through our peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across Utah, choosing the vehicle that suits your group and your route. With pick-up points in several cities, you set your own pace and skip the rigid schedules of traditional tour operators.

Best time to visit

The best months to explore Utah by campervan are April to June and September to October, when daytime temperatures in the desert parks sit comfortably between 15 °C and 30 °C. Spring wildflowers carpet the meadows around Zion, and autumn brings golden cottonwoods to Capitol Reef. The Moab area hosts the Jeep Safari event each April, drawing adventure enthusiasts from across the country. Summer remains the busiest season, so booking your motorhome early on Yescapa gives you access to competitive peer-to-peer pricing and a wider choice of vehicles. Winter opens up Utah's famous ski resorts, including those around Park City, offering a completely different road-trip experience.

The best road trips in Utah

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Arches and Canyonlands Loop

200 km 3–6 days

This 200 km loop from Moab links Arches National Park with the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands. Allow 3–6 days to hike Delicate Arch trail, take in Mesa Arch at sunrise and explore Dead Horse Point State Park. Ideal for campervans, with several campgrounds nearby.

The Zion–Bryce Loop

250 km 3–6 days

Covering 250 km between two of Utah's most celebrated parks, this route takes you from the towering walls of Zion Canyon to the hoodoo amphitheatres of Bryce Canyon. Plan 3–6 days and stop at Red Canyon along Highway 12. Motorhomes and campervans are both welcome on this well-surfaced route.

The Capitol Reef Crossing

400 km 5–8 days

A 400 km journey through Utah's quieter heartland, passing Capitol Reef National Park and the scenic Burr Trail. Spend 5–8 days discovering Fruita's historic orchards and the Waterpocket Fold. Highway 12 is fully paved but narrow in places — a campervan handles it with ease.

The Monument Valley Route

480 km 5–8 days

Stretching 480 km from Moab south to Monument Valley and back via Natural Bridges National Monument, this 5–8 day route showcases Utah's most dramatic desert scenery. Fuel stops are sparse on US-163, so plan ahead. Suitable for both motorhomes and campervans.

The Mighty Five Grand Tour

600 km 7–11 days

This 600 km circuit connects all five of Utah's national parks in one epic 7–11 day road trip. Start in Zion, head to Bryce Canyon, cross Capitol Reef, loop through Canyonlands and finish at Arches near Moab. A campervan keeps you flexible with campsite choices along the way.

The Grand Tour of Utah

900 km 10–15 days

At 900 km over 10–15 days, this route covers Utah from Salt Lake City south through all five national parks, with detours to Goblin Valley and Kodachrome Basin State Park. You pass through diverse terrain — alpine valleys, red-rock canyons and open desert. A motorhome with full facilities makes longer stretches comfortable.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Utah

Utah's interstate highways are toll-free, so you can travel the length of I-15 or I-70 without paying any charges. Speed limits for larger motorhomes and campervans generally match standard vehicle limits — 105 km/h on rural interstates and 80–95 km/h on other highways — but always check posted signs, as some stretches differ. Mountain passes along routes such as US-6 through Spanish Fork Canyon include steep gradients and lower speed advisory signs for heavier vehicles. Rest areas are well spaced along major corridors, and fuel stations appear regularly even on more remote stretches like Highway 12, though topping up before entering national park areas is wise.

The hire experience was excellent throughout. The owners were very friendly, accommodating and easy to deal with. We had such a good trip. The van is really well looked after and a pleasure to drive. The owners helped with anything we were unsure of and even gave us tips on where to eat and park up. We would definitely hire through these owners again.
