Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Montana

Montana — a region worth exploring

Montana's Glacier National Park alone spans over 1,600 square kilometres and contains more than 700 miles of hiking trails, making it one of the most remarkable wilderness areas in North America. Known as Big Sky Country, this north-western US state stretches from the Great Plains in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west, offering an extraordinary range of landscapes for road trips. From Billings to Missoula is roughly 560 km, crossing wide-open prairies before climbing into forested mountain valleys. The drive from Great Falls to the west entrance of Glacier National Park covers about 290 km of increasingly dramatic scenery. Along the way, you can explore the Lewis and Clark Caverns, soak in natural hot springs near Bozeman, or follow the Yellowstone River through Paradise Valley towards the northern entrance of Yellowstone National Park. Montana's roads are well suited to larger vehicles, with long, straight highways across the plains and well-maintained mountain passes that welcome campervans and motorhomes alike. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across the state, giving you the freedom to pick up your vehicle in cities like Billings, Missoula, or Helena and set off at your own pace. The peer-to-peer model means a wider choice of vehicles and often more flexible arrangements than traditional hire companies.

Best time to visit

The best time to hire a campervan in Montana is from June to September, when the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park is fully open — typically from late June until mid-October. July brings the famous Sweet Pea Festival in Bozeman, a week-long celebration of arts, music, and local culture. Summer campsites across Montana fill with fellow travellers, so booking your Yescapa motorhome early is worthwhile. Shoulder months like May and late September offer quieter roads and lower hire rates through peer-to-peer owners, ideal if you prefer a more peaceful experience.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Montana

Montana has no toll roads, so you can travel freely without worrying about fees. Interstate highways such as I-90 and I-15 are the main corridors, both well maintained and suitable for motorhomes. The speed limit on rural interstates is 80 mph (around 129 km/h) for cars, but if your campervan or motorhome exceeds a certain weight, you should keep to 65 mph (105 km/h) on these stretches. Mountain passes like those near Lookout Pass or MacDonald Pass may require lower gears and extra caution in larger vehicles. Rest areas are generously spaced along major routes, often with free overnight parking permitted for a single night.

We had an amazing trip! Rafaela and Carina were so kind, and we couldn’t recommend their van enough 🤩🙏🏼 The van had everything we needed for a proper “van life” experience, and you can also stay at campsites whenever you want!

We hired a motorhome from Cemil for a week to travel around Switzerland. We also visited France, Germany and Liechtenstein. Before the trip Cemil was helpful and responded to questions promptly. On the day of pick up he met us at the train station and the handover was smooth and quick. At the end if the trip it was also a very smooth transition and Cemil kindly drove us back to the airport. The van was great - very easy to drive and everything worked perfectly. All tolls and insurance were covered. We were very happy with the motorhome and would highly recommend renting from Cemil.

We had a great experience hiring this motorhome. Everything went smoothly and we had absolutely zero issues throughout our trip. Fernando kept us informed about everything from the beginning and was very friendly and helpful. He was also very flexible with both the pickup and drop-off times, which made everything much easier. The location is perfect, especially if you're arriving via Prague Airport. We travelled all the way to Hungary and back to Poland, staying at several off-grid locations along the way. We had an amazing time at Lake Balaton in Hungary and also loved our stay at the Pod Opaleńcem campsite in Świeradów-Zdrój, Poland. We would definitely recommend this motorhome hire and would happily rent from Fernando again!
