Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Arizona

Arizona — a region worth exploring

Arizona's Grand Canyon stretches 446 km along the Colorado River, carved over roughly six million years into one of the most recognisable natural landmarks on Earth. From the red-rock formations of Sedona to the towering saguaro cacti of Saguaro National Park near Tucson, the state offers a landscape that shifts dramatically as you travel. Phoenix to Flagstaff is around 230 km, taking you from sun-baked desert up to cool pine forests at over 2,100 metres elevation. Head north-east and you will reach Monument Valley, where sandstone buttes rise from the Navajo Nation floor — a drive of roughly 460 km from Tucson. Arizona's roads are generally wide and well-maintained, making them ideal for larger vehicles, though winding routes through Oak Creek Canyon and mountain passes near Prescott add variety for those who enjoy a more scenic drive. Lake Powell, straddling the Utah border near Page, provides waterside overnight spots, while Petrified Forest National Park in the east showcases ancient fossilised wood across a painted desert. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners based across Arizona — in Phoenix, Tucson, Flagstaff and beyond. This peer-to-peer approach means a wider choice of vehicles, from compact campervans suited to canyon roads to fully equipped motorhomes for extended desert tours, all at prices set by real people rather than large fleets.

Best time to visit

Spring is a superb time to explore Arizona by campervan, with March to May bringing comfortable temperatures across the desert and wildflower blooms in Picacho Peak State Park. Autumn, from September to November, is equally rewarding — catch the Sedona Arts Festival in October for open-air galleries amid the red rocks. Summer suits higher-elevation destinations like Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon's South Rim, while winter is pleasant in the southern deserts around Tucson. Yescapa's peer-to-peer model means you can often find competitive hire prices outside peak holiday weekends, so booking a motorhome midweek or in shoulder months can stretch your budget further.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Arizona

Arizona's interstate highways are toll-free, so you will not need any passes or transponders for your motorhome journey. Speed limits on interstates are typically 75 mph (120 km/h) for cars, but vehicles over 10,000 lbs are limited to 65 mph (105 km/h) on most stretches. Interstate 17 connects Phoenix to Flagstaff and climbs through mountainous terrain with long grades — use lower gears on descents. Interstate 40 runs east–west across the north, while Interstate 10 crosses the southern desert. Rest areas with free overnight parking are spaced along major routes, though signage will indicate any time limits.

We hired Trina for 5 nights earlier this July. My girlfriend and I had a fantastic time on the island. Jandro was incredibly helpful, always on hand before and during the trip to answer any questions which really helped us navigate the island and enjoy our trip. The vehicle was fantastic, an incredible experience to drive. All the amenities were brilliant as well. I would highly recommend using Jandro and one of his vans for a fantastic Mallorca experience!

Communication with the owner was great, van was immaculate, heaps of choice, love the peer to peer concept. Easy to add an extra driver and ID checks were very thorough but straightforward. Changing dates wasn't so easy, the owner was great, but the process at the back end took some manual effort. Teething problems, not a big deal. Main area that needs improving (for me anyway) is the deposit. There was a single line in a table stating Deposit: cash or transfer, that I hadn't seen. The owner asked for the cash or a transfer when we were at the car, which he explained was normal process, but Yescapa could have explained beforehand. I transferred €2000 directly to the owner, which didn't feel comfortable. I had expected this would all be done via Yescapa. I ended up losing €45 in exchange rate variations + fees as well, the owner's bank had challenges which meant it to 5 days to get a lot of cash back. It was lucky we had that amount at hand. I would use Yescapa again. I hope they can tidy up and improve the processes though.

Incredible time spent across the south of France with an incredible van! From beach, lakes, mountains and fields, it got me places I didn’t even pre conceive. Can’t speak more highly of my over all experience from van collection at train station to drop off. Drives smoother than my Suzuki jimny and can confirm very 6ft 4 friendly.

We had an amazing experience hiring Eli's campervan! It was perfect for our family of four – myself, my partner, and our two young daughters. The van was spotless, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our trip. It was easy to drive, well-equipped, and made exploring the malaga so much more enjoyable. The owners were friendly, helpful, and made the whole rental process smooth from start to finish. We made some unforgettable family memories and wouldn't hesitate to rent this campervan again. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a fun, comfortable, and hassle-free adventure in Spain. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
