Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Washington State

Washington State — a region worth exploring

Washington State stretches across 184,827 square kilometres from the Pacific coastline to the arid Columbia Plateau, making it one of the most geographically diverse states in the US. The Olympic Peninsula alone receives over three metres of rainfall each year, nurturing the Hoh Rain Forest — one of the largest temperate rainforests in the western hemisphere. From Seattle, you can reach the dramatic volcanic peak of Mount Rainier in roughly 100 km, while the lavender fields of Sequim sit about 130 km to the northwest on the Olympic Peninsula. Beyond the Cascade Range, the landscape shifts to rolling wheat fields, deep river gorges, and the remarkable basalt columns of Dry Falls. Washington State rewards slow travel: the San Juan Islands offer whale-watching from spring through autumn, the Columbia River Gorge serves up world-class windsurfing, and North Cascades National Park delivers alpine scenery with far fewer crowds than its southern neighbours. Whether you fancy coastal drives, vineyard-hopping in the Walla Walla wine region, or forest trails through old-growth cedar, a campervan lets you set your own pace. Larger groups or families may prefer a motorhome for extra living space on longer loops. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across Washington State, choosing from a range of campervans and vehicles that suit your route, your group, and your budget.

Best time to visit

Washington State is brilliant from May to October, when dry weather opens up mountain passes and coastal trails alike. June brings the Sequim Lavender Festival on the Olympic Peninsula, a fragrant weekend celebration that pairs perfectly with a campervan tour of the north coast. September and October are ideal for exploring eastern Washington's wine country around harvest time, with fewer fellow travellers on the road. Book your motorhome early for July and August — the most sought-after months — and consider shoulder-season dates through Yescapa, where peer-to-peer pricing from local owners often makes spring and autumn trips especially good value.

The Olympic Peninsula Loop

250 km 3–6 days

The San Juan Islands Discovery

200 km 3–5 days

Covering around 200 km including ferry crossings from Anacortes, this route explores Friday Harbor and Orcas Island over 3–5 days. Watch for orca pods from Lime Kiln Point and enjoy quiet anchorages — a compact campervan is ideal for the island roads.

The Cascades Scenic Loop

350 km 5–8 days

A 350 km loop through Washington State's volcanic heartland, linking Leavenworth's Bavarian-style village with the alpine meadows of Stevens Pass and the orchards of Lake Chelan. Motorhomes handle the wide highways well, and lakeside campsites offer full hook-ups.

The Volcanic Trail: Rainier to St. Helens

400 km 5–8 days

This 400 km route connects Mount Rainier National Park with the blast zone of Mount St. Helens over 5–8 days. Stop at Reflection Lakes and the Johnston Ridge Observatory for unforgettable views. Campervans and motorhomes both manage the well-maintained park roads.

The Grand Washington State Tour

700 km 10–15 days

At 700 km over 10–15 days, this grand loop links Seattle, the Olympic coast, the San Juan ferry terminal at Anacortes, and the North Cascades Highway. A motorhome gives you room to settle in at each stop, from temperate rainforest to high mountain passes.

The East–West Crossing

550 km 7–11 days

Spanning 550 km from Seattle to Spokane, this Washington State traverse follows I-90 across Snoqualmie Pass, past the wild scenery of Vantage Bridge over the Columbia River, and into the Palouse wheat fields. Rest areas and RV-friendly stops are plentiful along the route.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Washington State

Washington State has no toll roads for most routes, though a few bridges and express lanes around Seattle use the Good To Go! electronic tolling system. Speed limits on interstate highways are typically 60–70 mph for cars, but motorhomes and larger campervans over 10,000 lbs are limited to 60 mph on many stretches. Mountain passes such as Stevens Pass and Snoqualmie Pass on Interstate 90 can require chains in winter, so check conditions before crossing the Cascades. Rest areas are well spaced along I-5 and I-90, many offering free overnight parking for self-contained vehicles.

The hire experience was excellent throughout. The owners were very friendly, accommodating and easy to deal with. We had such a good trip. The van is really well looked after and a pleasure to drive. The owners helped with anything we were unsure of and even gave us tips on where to eat and park up. We would definitely hire through these owners again.

We hired Trina for 5 nights earlier this July. My girlfriend and I had a fantastic time on the island. Jandro was incredibly helpful, always on hand before and during the trip to answer any questions which really helped us navigate the island and enjoy our trip. The vehicle was fantastic, an incredible experience to drive. All the amenities were brilliant as well. I would highly recommend using Jandro and one of his vans for a fantastic Mallorca experience!

Communication with the owner was great, van was immaculate, heaps of choice, love the peer to peer concept. Easy to add an extra driver and ID checks were very thorough but straightforward. Changing dates wasn't so easy, the owner was great, but the process at the back end took some manual effort. Teething problems, not a big deal. Main area that needs improving (for me anyway) is the deposit. There was a single line in a table stating Deposit: cash or transfer, that I hadn't seen. The owner asked for the cash or a transfer when we were at the car, which he explained was normal process, but Yescapa could have explained beforehand. I transferred €2000 directly to the owner, which didn't feel comfortable. I had expected this would all be done via Yescapa. I ended up losing €45 in exchange rate variations + fees as well, the owner's bank had challenges which meant it to 5 days to get a lot of cash back. It was lucky we had that amount at hand. I would use Yescapa again. I hope they can tidy up and improve the processes though.

Incredible time spent across the south of France with an incredible van! From beach, lakes, mountains and fields, it got me places I didn’t even pre conceive. Can’t speak more highly of my over all experience from van collection at train station to drop off. Drives smoother than my Suzuki jimny and can confirm very 6ft 4 friendly.

We had an amazing experience hiring Eli's campervan! It was perfect for our family of four – myself, my partner, and our two young daughters. The van was spotless, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our trip. It was easy to drive, well-equipped, and made exploring the malaga so much more enjoyable. The owners were friendly, helpful, and made the whole rental process smooth from start to finish. We made some unforgettable family memories and wouldn't hesitate to rent this campervan again. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a fun, comfortable, and hassle-free adventure in Spain. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
