Why choose Newcastle Australia for your road trip

Newcastle Australia — a city worth exploring

Newcastle's Bogey Hole, carved into the rock platform at the base of the cliffs by convicts in the 1820s, remains one of Australia's oldest ocean baths and a unique spot for a coastal swim. This harbour city on the Hunter River mouth blends industrial heritage with a relaxed beach culture that rewards exploration on four wheels. Stroll the Newcastle Memorial Walk along the clifftops between Bar Beach and Strzelecki Lookout, then head inland to visit the Newcastle Museum in the restored Honeysuckle rail workshops. Fort Scratchley Historic Site, perched above Nobbys Beach, is the only fort in Australia to have fired upon an enemy vessel during wartime. Art lovers can spend an afternoon at the Newcastle Art Gallery, home to one of the finest regional collections in the country. The city sits just 160 km north of Sydney, making it an easy first stop on a longer coastal adventure, while the Hunter Valley wine region begins barely 50 km to the north-west. Roads around Newcastle are well suited to larger vehicles, with wide coastal routes and clearly signed campsite access. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from a local owner, which means you benefit from personal tips on the best beaches, lookouts and overnight spots that only residents know about.

Best time to visit

Newcastle enjoys warm summers and mild winters, so you can plan a campervan trip here in almost any month. February brings the Surfest Newcastle, one of the longest-running surf festivals in the world, filling the city's beaches with energy. Autumn, from March to May, offers comfortable driving temperatures and quieter campsite availability. If you book through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often makes shoulder-season hire more affordable than peak summer. For the best selection of motorhomes and campervans, reserve a few weeks ahead during school holiday periods in December and January.
