Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Byron Bay

Byron Bay — a region worth exploring

Byron Bay sits at the easternmost point of the Australian mainland, where the Cape Byron Lighthouse has guided ships since 1901 from its perch 94 metres above sea level. This coastal town in New South Wales draws travellers with its blend of surf culture, lush hinterland, and a relaxed pace of life that feels worlds away from the city. From the golden stretch of Wategos Beach to the rainforest trails of Nightcap National Park, roughly 35 km inland, the region rewards those who take their time. Head south along the coast and you reach Lennox Head in just 15 km, a favourite among surfers and dolphin spotters. Travel north for about 30 km and you arrive at the creative hub of Mullumbimby, nestled among rolling green hills. The Byron Bay hinterland is home to Minyon Falls, a dramatic 100-metre waterfall surrounded by subtropical rainforest, while the town itself offers bustling markets at the Butler Street Reserve every Thursday. Exploring Byron Bay by campervan lets you wake up to ocean views one morning and birdsong in the hinterland the next. A motorhome gives you the freedom to follow the coast or venture inland without worrying about accommodation. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across the region, choosing from a range of vehicles that suit your travel style and group size. It is a peer-to-peer approach that keeps things personal and often more affordable than traditional options.

Best time to visit

Byron Bay enjoys a subtropical climate, making it a year-round destination for campervan travel. The dry season from May to October brings comfortable daytime temperatures and clear skies, ideal for coastal walks and hinterland hikes. January hosts the Byron Bay International Film Festival, while Bluesfest, one of Australia's premier music events, takes place over the Easter long weekend each year. Summer months from December to February are the busiest, so booking your hire early through Yescapa gives you the best choice of vehicles at peer-to-peer prices. Autumn and winter offer quieter roads and plenty of available campsites across the Byron Bay region.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Byron Bay

The Pacific Motorway (M1) connects Byron Bay to Brisbane, roughly 170 km to the north, and continues south towards Sydney. There are no toll roads in the immediate Byron Bay area, though tolls apply on sections of the M1 closer to Brisbane and Sydney. Speed limits for motorhomes under 4.5 tonnes generally match standard car limits, while larger vehicles must observe reduced limits of 100 km/h on highways. Roads through the hinterland can be narrower and winding, so take your time if you are driving a larger motorhome. Rest areas with basic facilities are well signposted along the Pacific Highway.

Great experience renting the Jimny. The owners were brilliant to deal with from start to finish, and the Jeep was in excellent condition. It was perfect for exploring the Algarve. Would definitely recommend and would happily rent from them again!

Clean, well-maintained vehicle that gave us so many great memories! We traveled to many places and drove around 900 km ourselves, and it handled everything flawlessly. Thanks to its size, parking was super easy, we could fit anywhere, and we were able to sleep in spots where a different kind of campervan wouldn't have worked. It is fully equipped with everything provided, even extra games for beach days! The bed and bedding were clean, and it has a really comfortable mattress. The owners were super nice and sweet. Everything went smoothly during both pickup and drop-off, and they were always there to help whenever we needed it, even when we got a bit lost! 😅 Plus point that they were super cool and easy to talk to. P.S. The AC works like a charm!
