The Illawarra region offers a good mix of campsites, from beachfront parks with ocean views to quieter spots nestled against the escarpment. Many sites cater to both campervans and motorhomes, with powered pitches, dump points, and modern amenity blocks including hot showers and laundry facilities. You'll find options spread from the northern suburbs of Wollongong right down to the dairy country around Kiama and Gerringong, so there's always somewhere convenient to pull in for the night.
The Illawarra region is well connected by the M1 Princes Motorway, which links Sydney to Wollongong and is toll-free south of Waterfall. Speed limits for motorhomes under 4.5 tonnes generally match standard car limits, but vehicles over 4.5 tonnes are restricted to 100 km/h on motorways. Lawrence Hargrave Drive, part of the Grand Pacific Drive, includes the Sea Cliff Bridge — open to all vehicles but with a 60 km/h limit. Rest areas with parking suitable for larger vehicles are spaced along the Princes Highway heading south towards Kiama and Berry.
I had the most wonderful trip in Eve’s van. It has everything you need, a great sized fridge, a large comfy bed, cooking equipment, electrics to be off grid, a great shower & toilet. The van ran very smoothly and was a perfect size even driving through the towns was no problem at all. They were very accommodating, helping me with local tip and recommendations. I’d 100% recommend this van to anyone thinking of taking a road trip, you won’t regret it :)
