Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Illawarra

Illawarra — a region worth exploring

Illawarra's Grand Pacific Drive stretches 140 kilometres along one of Australia's most celebrated coastal roads, crossing the iconic Sea Cliff Bridge that clings to the cliffs between Clifton and Coalcliff. This narrow strip of coastline south of Sydney is framed by the Illawarra Escarpment to the west and the Tasman Sea to the east, creating a landscape that shifts from golden beaches to lush rainforest within minutes. From Wollongong, the region's largest city, you can reach the charming seaside town of Kiama — famous for its Blowhole — in just 35 kilometres, while the drive from Wollongong north to the Royal National Park covers roughly 45 kilometres. Along the way, you'll find Minnamurra Rainforest with its elevated boardwalks, the volcanic rock formations at Bombo Quarry, and the freshwater swimming spot at Sublime Point Lookout high above the coast. The Illawarra region suits both campervans and motorhomes, with well-maintained roads connecting coastal towns and plenty of overnight stops near the shore. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the Illawarra area, choosing from a range of vehicles that match your group size and travel style. It's a practical, peer-to-peer way to explore this stretch of coastline at your own pace, with the freedom to linger wherever the view — or the fish and chips — calls you to stop.

Best time to visit

The Illawarra coast enjoys mild conditions for much of the year, making it a flexible destination for campervan travel. September to November is particularly rewarding, when wildflowers bloom across the escarpment and the Illawarra Folk Festival brings live music to Bulli in mid-November. Summer, from December to February, is peak season — ideal for beach days at Austinmer and Thirroul, though booking your Yescapa motorhome early is wise as demand rises. Autumn (March to May) offers quieter roads and comfortable temperatures for bushwalking. Peer-to-peer hire through Yescapa often means more competitive pricing outside peak months, giving you great value on an Illawarra road trip.

I had the most wonderful trip in Eve’s van. It has everything you need, a great sized fridge, a large comfy bed, cooking equipment, electrics to be off grid, a great shower & toilet. The van ran very smoothly and was a perfect size even driving through the towns was no problem at all. They were very accommodating, helping me with local tip and recommendations. I’d 100% recommend this van to anyone thinking of taking a road trip, you won’t regret it :)

Inigio and his lovely girlfriend looked after Dolly for one week here in the Algarve area. They brought her back clean and in really good shape. Before and during the rental period we had a very good dialogue. I can highly reccomend them to lend your car. :-)

Fantastic experience. Raul really went above and beyond to help us out and was always responsive with any queries we had. The van was in excellent condition, had everything we needed, and was ideal for our trip into the Pyrenees, plus heading south for the solar eclipse. Would highly recommend.
