Why hire a campervan or motorhome in New South Wales

New South Wales — a region worth exploring

New South Wales stretches across 801,150 square kilometres of Australia's east coast, making it the country's most populous state and home to over 750 national parks and reserves. From the sandstone cliffs of the Blue Mountains, just 100 km west of Sydney, to the surf beaches of Byron Bay some 770 km to the north, the landscape shifts dramatically between rainforest, alpine plateaux, and sun-drenched coastline. The Royal National Park, established in 1879, is the second-oldest national park in the world and sits right on Sydney's southern doorstep. Head inland and you will find the vast semi-arid plains of Broken Hill, a town so distinctive it operates on South Australian time. Along the coast, the Grand Pacific Drive follows 140 km of ocean road from Sydney through the Sea Cliff Bridge and down to Kiama's famous Blowhole. For those drawn to wine country, the Hunter Valley offers more than 150 cellar doors within easy reach of Newcastle. Travelling by campervan lets you connect these contrasting regions at your own pace, pulling over wherever the view demands it. A motorhome gives you the freedom to camp beside rivers in the Snowy Mountains one night and wake up on a beachfront pitch the next. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners spread right across New South Wales, choosing from a range of campervans and vehicles that suit your route, your group, and your budget.

Best time to visit

New South Wales enjoys a temperate climate along the coast, making it a year-round destination for campervan travel. September to November is ideal, with warm days and wildflower displays across the Blue Mountains. January brings Tamworth Country Music Festival, drawing thousands to the north. June to August suits the Snowy Mountains, where ski season opens up alpine touring. Summer, from December to February, is peak season along the coast, so booking your Yescapa hire early secures the best choice of vehicles and competitive peer-to-peer pricing. Autumn, from March to May, offers quieter roads and mild temperatures perfect for exploring New South Wales at a relaxed pace.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in New South Wales

New South Wales has an extensive motorway network, with most toll roads concentrated around Sydney. Tolls on routes like the M2, M5, and M7 are cashless, so you need an e-tag or pass registered before you travel. Outside Sydney, highways are generally toll-free. Speed limits for motorhomes over 4.5 tonnes are typically 100 km/h on open roads, compared with 110 km/h for cars. The Pacific Highway running north and the Princes Highway heading south are both well-maintained dual carriageways with regular rest areas suited to larger vehicles. Mountain passes in the Snowy region may require chains in winter.

An absolute 10/10 experience from start to finish! The owners were exceptionally professional, super friendly, and made everything from initial contact to booking and collection completely seamless. Meeting their beloved camper van, 'Olaf,' was the highlight of our trip. As first-time drivers of anything larger than an SUV, we were initially nervous, but Olaf completely surprised us—being fully automatic and featuring Android Auto infotainment system, he was an absolute breeze to drive and got us to our destinations hassle-free. The camper is fully equipped with everything you could possibly need for a short getaway, and honestly, you could easily stay much longer. If we ever find ourselves back in France, we would love to take Olaf out for another spin!

We absolutely loved our time in the caddy! Everything was great, from the collection, the functionality and the communication. The van is small but mighty, the owners have thought of every little detail (sink, shower, storage, kitchen, and a good sized comfy bed). We highly recommend using Yescapa and hiring this van- perfect for your dolomites adventure!
