Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Australia East Coast

Australia East Coast — a region worth exploring

Australia's east coast stretches over 4,000 kilometres from Cairns in tropical Far North Queensland to Melbourne's cosmopolitan waterfront, making it one of the longest continuous coastal drives on the planet. Along the way you can explore the Great Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site visible from space, walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and spot wild kangaroos on the white sands of Cape Hillsborough. The distance from Sydney to Brisbane is roughly 920 kilometres, while Melbourne to Cairns covers an impressive 2,860 kilometres — plenty of room for a road trip at your own pace. Coastal highways are generally well-maintained and suited to larger vehicles, though some national park access roads narrow to single lanes, so checking your vehicle dimensions before heading off is always wise. Rainforest-fringed hinterlands like the Daintree and the Blue Mountains offer cooler retreats just a short detour from the main route, and free or low-cost rest stops appear regularly along the Pacific coast. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners based in cities and towns right along the east coast. That peer-to-peer approach means a wider choice of vehicles — from compact campervans ideal for solo travellers to family-sized motorhomes — often at more competitive prices than traditional hire companies. It is the kind of flexibility that turns a long coastline into your own personal adventure.

Best time to visit

The east coast of Australia enjoys a warm climate for much of the year, so you can plan a campervan trip in almost any season. April to October is ideal for Queensland's tropical north, when dry days and comfortable temperatures make reef snorkelling and rainforest walks a pleasure. Further south, the Vivid Sydney festival lights up the harbour each May and June, giving you a brilliant reason to park up and explore the city. Summer, from December to February, is peak season along the New South Wales and Victorian coasts — book your motorhome on Yescapa early to lock in the best peer-to-peer prices. Shoulder months like March and November often deliver quieter campsites and excellent driving conditions right along the east coast.

Tropical Daintree Discovery

280 km 3–6 days

Head north from Cairns through Port Douglas to Cape Tribulation, where rainforest meets reef. At around 280 km return, this short east coast route is perfect in a compact campervan. Cross the Daintree River ferry and explore Mossman Gorge before camping under a canopy of ancient trees.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Australia East Coast

Most of the east coast of Australia is connected by the Pacific Motorway (M1) and the Bruce Highway (M1/A1), both toll-free for the majority of their length. Toll sections exist around Sydney and Brisbane — an e-tag or online pass is required, as there are no cash booths. Speed limits for motorhomes under 4.5 tonnes generally match car limits at 110 km/h on motorways, but vehicles over 4.5 tonnes are often restricted to 100 km/h. Rest areas with free overnight parking appear every 80–150 kilometres along major routes, and many include dump points for self-contained vehicles. Watch for height and weight restrictions on some urban tunnels, particularly in Sydney.

Both Jesus and Susana were very communicative and made the rental process very easy. The van is basically new in very good condition and easy to handle. It was fun cooking in remote places having a beautiful view and having a large fridge really helped to keep all cool and fresh. We had a nice time with it and would certainly recommend it to others.
