Why choose Townsville for your road trip

Townsville — a city worth exploring

Townsville's Castle Hill rises 286 metres above the coastal plain, offering panoramic views across Cleveland Bay and Magnetic Island just 8 km offshore. As the largest city in North Queensland, Townsville is a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the dry tropics, making it an ideal base for exploring by road. Reef HQ Great Barrier Reef Aquarium, the world's largest living coral reef aquarium, sits along the revitalised waterfront alongside the Museum of Tropical Queensland, where artefacts from the HMS Pandora shipwreck are on display. The Strand, a 2.2 km beachfront promenade, connects rock pools, playgrounds and barbecue areas perfect for a leisurely afternoon. Billabong Sanctuary, a wildlife park 17 km south of the city centre, lets you get close to crocodiles, koalas and wombats in a natural bushland setting. Charters Towers, a historic gold-rush town, lies 137 km south-west, while Paluma Range National Park and its lush rainforest trails are roughly 80 km to the north. The region's wide, well-maintained highways and generous campsite pitches make it welcoming for larger vehicles. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in the Townsville area, giving you the flexibility to set your own pace and the insider knowledge that comes from a peer-to-peer community of travellers who know these roads well.

Best time to visit

Townsville enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year, so you can plan a campervan trip with confidence in almost any season. The dry season from April to October brings clear skies and comfortable temperatures, ideal for driving and camping. The Townsville 400 Supercars event in July fills the city with motorsport energy, while the Australian Festival of Chamber Music each August draws music lovers to intimate waterfront venues. Booking your motorhome through Yescapa during the dry season gives you access to competitive peer-to-peer rates, especially if you plan a few weeks ahead. The wet season from November to March is warm and green, with quieter campsites and a more relaxed pace along the coast.

The hire experience was excellent throughout. The owners were very friendly, accommodating and easy to deal with. We had such a good trip. The van is really well looked after and a pleasure to drive. The owners helped with anything we were unsure of and even gave us tips on where to eat and park up. We would definitely hire through these owners again.
