Why choose Brisbane for your road trip

Brisbane — a city worth exploring

Brisbane sits where the Brisbane River winds through 15 km of inner-city reaches before meeting Moreton Bay, making it the only Australian state capital built around a navigable river that flows into a sheltered marine park. The city's South Bank Parklands stretch across 17 hectares of riverside gardens, pools and cultural venues right in the heart of town. You can spend a morning at the Queensland Museum & Scitcentre, then cross the Goodwill Bridge on foot to reach the City Botanic Gardens, which have occupied the same peninsula since 1855. For panoramic views, take the lift to the top of the Wheel of Brisbane or climb the Story Bridge — one of only three bridge climbs in the world. Mount Coot-tha Lookout, just 7 km west of the CBD, offers sweeping views across the city to the Glass House Mountains. Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, 12 km south-west, is the world's oldest and largest koala sanctuary, home to over 100 koalas. Day-trip options are generous: the Gold Coast is roughly 80 km south, while the Sunshine Coast sits about 100 km to the north, both reachable on well-maintained motorways suited to larger vehicles. Brisbane's flat, wide roads and mild year-round climate make it a comfortable base for exploring south-east Queensland by campervan or motorhome. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners who know the best routes, share tips on free camping spots and often include extras like camping chairs or portable barbecues — a genuine peer-to-peer advantage you won't find with traditional hire companies.

Best time to visit

Brisbane enjoys a subtropical climate, so you can visit comfortably in any season. Winter months from June to August bring dry, clear days ideal for campervan touring, while spring (September to November) coincides with jacaranda season, when purple canopies line entire streets. For festivals, plan around the Brisbane Festival each September, featuring live music, theatre and the spectacular Riverfire fireworks finale. Ekka — the Royal Queensland Show — fills the RNA Showgrounds every August with rides, animals and local produce. Book your Yescapa motorhome hire early for these peak event periods, as local owners' vehicles are in high demand. Shoulder months like April and October offer pleasant weather and quieter campsites across the region.

Where to park your motorhome

Brisbane's CBD offers several car parks that can accommodate larger vehicles, though height and length limits vary by facility. Overnight parking in public streets is generally not permitted for campervans or motorhomes, so plan to return to a campsite or designated rest area for the night. Always check signage for clearance heights before entering multi-storey car parks, and allow extra time during weekday peak hours.

  • King George Square Car Park, Adjacent to the city — Underground car park beneath City Hall with a 2.1 m height limit. Best for smaller campervans only; check vehicle dimensions before entry.
  • RNA Showgrounds Parking, 2km north — Large open-air lot at Bowen Hills with generous clearance for motorhomes. Often used during events; available for casual parking on non-event days.
  • Eat Street Northshore Parking, 4km northeast — Spacious waterfront car park at Hamilton with no height restrictions. Open during Eat Street market nights (Friday–Sunday) and available at other times.
