Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Coolangatta Airport

Coolangatta Airport — a region worth exploring

Coolangatta Airport, officially known as Gold Coast Airport (OOL), sits right on the border of Queensland and New South Wales, making it the only commercial airport in Australia that straddles two states. From here, the Pacific Motorway connects you to Brisbane, roughly 100 km to the north, while the coastal drive south to Byron Bay covers just 65 km of scenic road through beachside towns. The airport serves as a gateway to some of Australia's most celebrated coastal landscapes, including Burleigh Heads National Park, the Tweed Valley, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, and the towering natural rock formations at Point Danger. The Gold Coast hinterland, with its subtropical rainforests in Springbrook National Park and Lamington National Park, offers a striking contrast to the surf beaches just minutes from the terminal. Roads around Coolangatta are well-suited to campervans and motorhomes, with wide coastal highways and well-signposted routes into the hinterland. Whether you fancy a leisurely drive along the Gold Coast strip or a longer journey into the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, the area rewards exploration at a relaxed pace. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners near Coolangatta Airport, giving you the freedom to choose a vehicle that fits your plans — from compact campervans for couples to larger motorhomes for families — and set off on your adventure from the moment you land.

Best time to visit

The region around Coolangatta Airport enjoys a subtropical climate, making it a year-round destination for campervan travel. September to November is ideal, with warm days and fewer crowds ahead of the summer holidays. The Bleach* Festival, held each March across Gold Coast venues, celebrates arts and culture and is well worth timing your trip around. The Cooly Rocks On festival in June draws vintage car and music enthusiasts to Coolangatta itself. Book through Yescapa during the quieter autumn and winter months to take advantage of competitive hire rates from local owners, and you will find campsites along the coast far easier to secure.
