Cairns Airport sits just 7 kilometres north of the city centre, making it one of the most conveniently located gateways to tropical North Queensland. From here, you can reach the Great Barrier Reef's outer reefs in under two hours by boat, or drive 110 kilometres north along the Captain Cook Highway to the ancient Daintree Rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has existed for over 180 million years. The region surrounding Cairns Airport offers an extraordinary mix of reef, rainforest, and outback landscapes — all within a day's drive. Head south along the Bruce Highway and within 350 kilometres you reach Townsville and the gateway to Magnetic Island. Closer to Cairns, the Atherton Tablelands provide a cooler highland escape with crater lakes like Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine, waterfalls such as Millaa Millaa Falls, and rolling farmland. The Kuranda Scenic Railway, winding through gorges and past Barron Falls, begins just minutes from the airport. For those arriving by air and looking to explore at their own pace, hiring a campervan or motorhome near Cairns Airport is a brilliant way to begin your journey. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the region, choosing from a range of vehicles — from compact campervans ideal for couples to larger motorhomes suited to families. The peer-to-peer model means more choice, often better value, and the chance to get insider tips from owners who know the area well.
The dry season from May to October is the most popular time to hire a campervan near Cairns Airport, with warm days, low humidity, and minimal rainfall making it ideal for road trips. The Cairns Festival in August brings live music, art, and cultural events across the city. From June to September, you can swim comfortably at the region's beaches without stinger season concerns. The wet season from November to April is quieter, and with Yescapa's peer-to-peer pricing, you can often find excellent deals on motorhome hire during this period. Book early for the dry season months to secure the best selection of vehicles from local owners.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Drive 140 km north from Cairns Airport through Port Douglas and across the Daintree River ferry to Cape Tribulation. This route suits compact campervans perfectly, passing Mossman Gorge and offering rainforest walks where the canopy meets the coral sea. Allow time for a snorkelling stop at the Low Isles.
A 200 km loop from Cairns Airport up to Kuranda, across the Atherton Tablelands, and back via the Gillies Highway. Visit Millaa Millaa Falls, Lake Eacham, and the Curtain Fig Tree. The cooler highland climate and well-maintained roads make this route ideal for any motorhome or campervan.
Head 350 km south from Cairns Airport along the Bruce Highway to Townsville, stopping at Mission Beach, Cardwell, and Wallaman Falls — Australia's tallest single-drop waterfall. Plenty of campsite options along the way suit both campervans and larger motorhomes. Detour to Magnetic Island for a day trip.
From Cairns Airport, drive 450 km west along the Savannah Way to Undara Volcanic National Park, passing through Ravenshoe — Queensland's highest town. The lava tubes at Undara are remarkable, and the outback scenery shifts dramatically from rainforest to dry savannah. Best suited to self-contained campervans.
This 600 km circuit from Cairns Airport loops through the Atherton Tablelands, south to Innisfail, and north via Mission Beach and the Cassowary Coast. Spot wild cassowaries near Etty Bay, explore Paronella Park, and enjoy crater lakes. A motorhome with good storage is ideal for this extended journey.
Cover 750 km from Cairns Airport south to Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays, then return via the inland route through Charters Towers and the Atherton Tablelands. Visit Ayr's Burdekin region, swim at Cedar Creek Falls, and explore Bowen's beaches. A well-equipped campervan or motorhome makes this trip comfortable.

The Cairns region offers a wide variety of campsites, from beachfront parks along the Coral Sea to cooler highland retreats on the Atherton Tablelands. Many sites provide powered pitches, dump points, and amenities blocks with hot showers and laundry facilities, catering to both campervans and larger motorhomes. Whether you prefer a tropical coastal setting or a quieter spot surrounded by rainforest, you will find well-equipped options within easy reach of Cairns Airport.
Driving near Cairns Airport, you will primarily use the Captain Cook Highway heading north and the Bruce Highway heading south. There are no toll roads in the Cairns region or anywhere in Queensland outside of Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Speed limits for motorhomes under 4.5 tonnes generally match standard vehicle limits — 100 km/h on open highways and 50 km/h in built-up areas unless otherwise signed. Larger vehicles over 4.5 tonnes are restricted to 100 km/h maximum. Roads north of Cairns towards Cape Tribulation include a ferry crossing at the Daintree River, and some routes beyond may be unsealed, so check conditions before heading out in a larger motorhome.
Everyting more than perfect, happy to welcome you again!
Amazing renters, welcome again )
We rented this camper van for a two-week trip through the Alps and southern france, it was fantastic from start to finish. The van was reliable and easy to drive, even on the steep, winding alpine mountain roads. It also performed exceptionally well on the motorways, with cruise control making the longer journeys comfortable and stress-free. The layout was perfect for two people. The rear seating folds out to a bed and pop-top roof bed provided plenty of space and privacy when sleeping. During the day, the seating area and well-equipped kitchen made the van feel comfortable and practical, while the retractable awning was great for relaxing outside on warm evenings. The owners were incredibly friendly and welcoming. On arrival, they took the time to explain all the features of the van and made sure we were comfortable before setting off. The return process was just as easy and straightforward. Overall, this is a fantastic camper van owned by a lovely family. We had an amazing trip and would highly recommend both the van and its owners to anyone looking for a memorable campervan adventure. We would happily rent from them again in the future.
Incredibly easy- Hector was there to talk us through everything. He was happy to answer all of our questions and gave us excellent practical advice. We felt fully supported abd it gave us a real confidence boost when we took control of the camper. We had to contact Hector during out trip sbout the van and he was on hand and easy to engage with. Ditto with our drop off. We loved using the camper: it was confortable and easily accommodated our family of 5 (including two teenagers!). It was a wonderful way to explore the Basque Country and we would definitely be up for doing it again.
Tuvimos una gran semana con la furgo, yo y dos hijos adultos. El dueño Samu fue de mucha ayuda por mensajes de texto para extra preguntas mientras estuvimos fuera, y nos llevó a la estación después de devolver la furgo
We had a lovely trip. The van has absolutely everything you need, and Pedro and Davids were so helpful and kind. Would recommend this van!
